Rogers City can be explored through three distinct themes: shoreline and parks on Lake Huron, trails for activities that vary by season, and museums and stage performances. For planning, you can consider nature, maritime history and culture as different focuses for your stay.

Shoreline Views and Parks on Lake Huron

At Harbor View Park, the view looks out over the world’s largest open-pit mine. From the observation deck, you can watch large Great Lakes freighters being loaded with limestone at the docks there. Information panels provide additional details on site.

The parks vary in size and in their connection to the shoreline: Seagull Point Park covers 43 acres and has a mile of Lake Huron shoreline. Lakeside Park covers ten acres, also borders the lake, and includes Rogers City Marina. Its amenities include a swimming beach, volleyball courts and two playgrounds. There are also basketball courts and a large pavilion with an ice cream and snack stand, picnic tables, restrooms and drinking fountains. Lakeside Park therefore centers on both a beach and a range of sports and recreation amenities.

Trails and Seasonal Activities

The Huron Sunrise Trail is an 11-mile paved trail system. It connects parks and attractions outside Rogers City and ends at 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. Herman Vogler Conservation Area, by contrast, is a 270-acre wooded area with seven miles of trails. Hikers use these trails in summer, while cross-country skiers use them in winter. The two offerings therefore differ both in their stated purpose and in their seasonal use.

Herman Vogler Conservation Area also has picnic tables and benches, information panels and a fishing platform. The restrooms are fully accessible. This information refers to the restrooms, not to a blanket claim that the entire area is accessible. Visitors who want to combine the trails with time outdoors will therefore find designated visitor facilities here, in addition to activities that vary by season.

Maritime and Regional History

The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum focuses on the history of shipping on the Great Lakes. Exhibits include uniforms, navigation instruments and equipment; stories of former sailors are also part of the museum’s interpretation. The museum honors Great Lakes captains and crews, Coast Guard lighthouse keepers, French and British traders from the pre-colonial period, and Indigenous traders. Its focus therefore extends beyond shipping to include different groups connected with the history of the Great Lakes.

The Presque Isle County Historical Museum is housed in the Bradley House. The two-story house was built in 1914 as a bungalow for a family with seven bedrooms and is a National Historic Site. The museum displays furnishings from the early 1920s; other exhibits cover agriculture, logging and shipping. A visit therefore brings together two distinct dates: the year the house was built and the period when the displayed furnishings were made.

Stage, Films and Events

The Rogers Theater screens new and classic films and hosts live music, presentations and community forums, as well as live plays by the Rogers City Community Theatre. The Community Theatre stages at least three productions each season: a play, a musical and a summer youth musical. Lakeside Park hosts concerts throughout the summer, as well as Rogers City’s annual Nautical Festival. If a particular concert, the festival or a performance is important to your trip, check the dates for your travel period in advance.
