Sandy beaches on Lake Superior, sunset views over Ontonagon Pier and a trail through the forests give Ontonagon a variety of ways to explore.
Beaches and Parks on Lake Superior
Ontonagon’s beaches are sandy and offer views of Lake Superior. They’re suited to evening walks and picnics—two ways to enjoy a stay by the lake without a set itinerary. Lakeshore Park is a beach-access park near Ontonagon’s Main Street. From there, you can enjoy views of the sunset over Ontonagon Pier.
Since 2019, a group of volunteers has been laying ADA-compliant beach mats on Ontonagon’s beaches. The mats were funded by a grant from the Portage Health Foundation. Before your trip, check the current status of the infrastructure if you plan to use the mats during your visit.
Small Parks and Breaks in Town
RICC Park is a pocket park in the Village of Ontonagon, between Anytime Fitness and the Historical Society Museum. Benches and tables provide space for a picnic, a small gathering or a short rest while walking along Ontonagon’s Main Street. The park thus complements the beach destinations with an option for a break in town.
The difference between the two park options is practical: Lakeshore Park offers beach access and views of the sunset over the pier; RICC Park has benches and tables ready for a short break or a picnic. The two locations suit different moments during a stay, without forming a set walking route.
Museum and Lighthouse: Regional History
The Ontonagon County Historical Museum is a heritage site of Keweenaw National Historical Park. Its exhibits cover mining, logging, agriculture and shipping, as well as the region’s social life. The museum is wheelchair accessible. Those interested in several aspects of regional history will find a range of topics under one roof.
Another historic landmark is the Ontonagon Lighthouse. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 1975. The museum and lighthouse offer different points of focus: the museum highlights work, the economy and social life, while the lighthouse’s listing on the register marks its historic designation.
Forests and Wildlife Viewing
The Ontonagon-Rockland Trail is 13 miles long and connects Ontonagon with Rockland. It runs through forests and offers opportunities to observe wildlife. Wildlife-viewing conditions vary seasonally; check trail conditions before your trip as well. For choosing between beach time and a longer route through forest scenery, these offer different focuses: evenings walks and picnics by the lake, and forests and potential wildlife sightings on the trail.
Getting Around the Marina
Ontonagon Marina has 31 seasonal slips and six transient slips. Transportation is available in the marina area to get into town for shopping and meals, and to nearby tourist destinations. This guidance complements the outings with practical destinations for your stay, without assuming a particular location for your accommodation.
