Discover Midland County through its striking contrasts: mid-20th-century architecture and a terraced dahlia garden sit alongside paved trails, river access and short walks. The offerings range from cultural sites to experiences by the water; their varied focus can help you plan a trip around your own interests.

Architecture, Garden Art and Culture

Alden B. Dow Home and Studio is a National Historic Landmark and is considered one of the finest examples of mid-20th-century design. Alden Dow designed and built his architectural studio and home between 1934 and 1941. The building brings together a specific history of construction and a clearly defined architectural theme.

Dahlia Hill offers a different perspective on design: Eight terraces are home to nearly 3,000 dahlia plants and more than 340 varieties. Dahlia Hill offers educational garden tours and visits to the original sculptures; check tour availability before your visit. Adjacent museums feature works by Charles Breed, the founder and artist of the Dahlia Hill Society.

The Midland Center for the Arts adds to these cultural sites with live performances, hands-on museum experiences, classes, vacation programs and community programs. Events are also part of the regional scene: The Midland County Agricultural and Horticultural Society offers a variety of events throughout the year, including festivals, RV and bicycle rallies, exhibitions and special community events. The selection may change. The history of the Midland County Fair dates back to 1866, when it was first held at the Methodist Church on Main Street.

The route offers a different scale from a short walk in one of the smaller parks.

The Chippewa Nature Center encompasses more than 1,500 acres of wilderness, offering another way to experience the region’s nature.

The options also vary among the area’s waterfront spots. Sanford Lake Park is located in the village of Sanford and offers a beach, waterfront recreation and a boat launch. In western Midland County, in Lee Township on the Chippewa River, Manitou Park offers fishing from the riverbank and a launch site for canoes and kayaks. Veterans Memorial Park is on the edge of the village of Sanford, features old pine trees and provides access to the Salt River.

Both the area’s history and its present-day condition shape River Trails Heritage Park: The surrounding area is marked by the history of logging and Indigenous peoples. Following the effects of a recent flood, nature is currently reclaiming the park.

Market and Seasonal Planning
