A restored lighthouse on Lake Michigan, historic buildings, and large-scale murals tell different stories about the region in Mason County. The freshwater sand dunes of Ludington State Park add to the picture. If you’re interested in both cultural history and landscapes, you’ll find a variety of themes for your trip here.
Lighthouse and dunes on Lake Michigan
Ludington State Park is located on the shore of Lake Michigan in Hamlin Township in Mason County. The park encompasses 5,300 acres of freshwater sand dunes and also has 21 miles of marked trails. The scale of the dune landscape and the trail network give your nature visit a clear framework.
Maritime heritage takes center stage at Big Sable Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse has been fully restored and is open to visitors daily from May through October. Volunteer lighthouse keepers offer tours and staff the gift shop. Visitors can also climb the 112-foot tower; climbing conditions may vary by season. Check seasonal access and climbing conditions before your trip.
History in buildings and exhibits
Historic White Pine Village is an open-air museum about the history of Mason County, where visitors can experience the region’s past. It includes more than 30 historic buildings, as well as a working sawmill. The site presents history not only through exhibits but also through its buildings and working facilities.
The Port of Ludington Maritime Museum offers a maritime perspective. It features interactive exhibits on three floors, and visitors can also step inside a ship’s pilothouse. The museum is housed in a restored former U.S. Coast Guard station on Lake Michigan. Maritime exhibits and historic buildings come together here, without limiting you to a single format.
Murals, cultural trails, and regional themes
In downtown Ludington, the Ludington Murals form a self-guided outdoor gallery. Their large-scale murals tell chapters of Mason County’s history. For another way to explore the region’s past, Mason County has six cultural trails with more than 90 stops. The trail stops may change.
Individual themed trails also offer their own perspectives: the Mason County Barn Quilt Trail highlights the lost art of barn decoration. The works along the Sculpture Trail represent the region’s maritime, lumbering, and agricultural history. Together, these themes show the many ways regional history can be reflected in art, craftsmanship, and the landscape.
Remembrance and waterscapes
The Pere Marquette Memorial Cross marks the place where Father Jacques Marquette died on May 18, 1675. From there, you can look out over Lake Michigan and Pere Marquette Lake. The site also has a boat launch with direct access to Pere Marquette Lake. In the region, the Pere Marquette River flows about 67 miles before emptying into Pere Marquette Lake, just south of Ludington.
Events and travel planning
The JCI Ludington Freedom Festival has been held every year since 1874; event dates vary from year to year. If you’d like to include the festival in your trip, check the current dates. The S.S. Badger Carferry operates between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Check schedules and service status before your trip.
In Ludington, the Sandcastles Children's Museum has also been operating since 2006. It has four exhibit levels and is located in the former Elks Lodge at the corner of North Harrison and Ludington Avenue. Check the latest entrance information before you go.
