In Jackson County, nature trails wind through varied landscapes and past notable historic sites. The Falling Waters Trail is 10.5 miles long and 12 feet wide; the paved trail is designed for walking, running, or cycling. It passes natural springs and lakes that form the headwaters of four of Michigan’s major rivers. At its western trailhead in Concord, the trail crosses the Kalamazoo River; wetlands with abundant wildlife lie there. The Falling Waters Sculpture Trail features a total of 17 sculptures near mile marker 10 and Weatherwax Drive.

Trails and Waterscapes

The Nature for All Trail at Dahlem offers a different scale: it is 3/8 mile long, paved, and designed for visitors with limited mobility. Dahlem’s Butterfly Trail loops around fields and meadows with goldenrod and other native wildflowers. Together, the two trails offer different views of the terrain—from a short paved path to loops through flower-filled meadows.

At Sparks Foundation County Park, The Cascades is an artificial, illuminated waterfall with colorful lighting. Its dimensions give the feature an impressive scale: it is 500 feet long, 64 feet high, and 60 feet wide. A different park landscape can be found along Sandstone Creek at Minard Mills County Park. Here, natural surroundings meet landscaped gardens, a creek, a park nursery, and a playground. The park’s history began with a sawmill built by the George Minard family in 1834; a gristmill and a cider mill were later added.

Ella Sharp Park covers 562 acres along the Grand River and has miles of hiking trails. The Ella Sharp Museum, a local history and art museum, is located within the park. Here, trails through an expansive riverside landscape sit alongside a place dedicated to local history and art.

History in Many Forms

The Underground Railroad ran through Jackson County. Several residents risked their lives to provision, shelter, and transport passengers. Original Jackson Historic Prison Tours take visitors through the grounds of the Old Prison, enclosed by stone walls about 25 feet high. Check the tour booking details before your trip.

At the Waterloo Farm Museum, an original farmhouse and outbuildings illustrate self-sufficiency in 19th-century farming. Visitors can tour the buildings; an appointment is required for scheduled tours. The Michigan Military Heritage Museum offers a different historical perspective. Its exhibits include a World War I trench, a 1917 Ford Model T ambulance, and cannons from the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War. The Lost Railway Museum focuses on the era of electric interurban railways.

Individual buildings also tell stories of different eras and architectural styles. The Coe House was built in 1871 in the Tuscan Vernacular style; the Mann House dates to 1883 and is an example of middle-class Victorian architecture. The Dewey School Museum is a one-room schoolhouse built around the mid-19th century. Walker Tavern was built in 1832.
