The Grand River flows through downtown Ionia. With a theater dating back to 1931, a house from the 1880s, more than a dozen city parks, and nearby destinations, the city offers a range of ways to plan a stay. You can focus on culture, green spaces, and landscapes individually.

River and Green Spaces in Ionia

Ionia has more than a dozen city parks with green spaces, playgrounds, and gathering places. The range extends from open green spaces to places to play and come together. Together with the Grand River in the city center, these urban features shape a different side of Ionia from the larger landscapes nearby.

Landscapes and Recreation Nearby

Southeast of Ionia, the nearby Ionia State Recreation Area covers 4,500 acres of rolling hills, open meadows, old-growth forests, and wetlands. It also includes a scenic lake, a winding river, and habitats for diverse wildlife. These described landscapes make the area a distinct focus alongside the city parks.

Bertha Brock Park is located two miles west of Ionia on M-21. Its amenities include a campground, rental lodges, play areas, and picnic shelters, as well as hiking trails and a sledding hill. Family-oriented recreational activities are also available. Here, specific facilities and activities are the focus, complementing the landscapes of the Ionia State Recreation Area with more options for recreation nearby.

Theater History and Museum

The Ionia Theatre was built in 1931 for vaudeville performers. Its interior and design are modeled on the New York Roxy Theatre. The venue screens films from the current first-run program. This brings together its original vaudeville purpose, its named architectural inspiration, and its film program. Those interested in the theater’s history will find a connection between its origins and today’s first-run program.

The John C. Blanchard House is an Italianate building from the 1880s. Its exterior is made of locally quarried Ionia Variegated Sandstone. The house is home to the Ionia County Historical Society and the Ionia County Museum, and is located in Ionia’s Historic District. Architecture, local building materials, and historical institutions come together here in a single building. Alongside the theater, it offers another cultural and historical site in the city.

Connections Along the Rail Trail

The Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail runs through Ionia and connects the city westward to Lowell. Eastward, the route continues via the Clinton–Ionia–Shiawassee Trail to Portland, St. Johns, and Owosso. For cyclists, choosing a direction is a helpful way to plan: Lowell is the named destination to the west, while the eastern route includes several towns. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two directions.
