Two rivers run through Lansing: the Grand River and the Red Cedar River. The city also has an extensive riverside trail, museums about Michigan history, and attractions focused on science and city life. This gives you different options when planning your visit: spend time outdoors, explore historical topics or visit interactive exhibits.

River Trails and Activities on the Water

The Lansing River Trail extends for more than 20 miles along the Grand River and the Red Cedar River through Lansing and East Lansing. It is suitable for cycling, running and walking. Visitors can also paddle or row on the two rivers. The trail and the water offer different ways to enjoy the rivers: you can follow them from the trail or get active on the water.

Another option along the riverbank is Rotary Park. The park is open and includes a beach area and a plaza. If you plan to take a tour at Potter Park Zoo, check the available dates in advance.

History and Architecture

At the Michigan History Museum, five floors take visitors through Michigan history, from the earliest populations to the late 20th century. The museum also presents special exhibitions on Michigan history each year. The Turner-Dodge House offers a different perspective on time: this historic house in Lansing was built in 1855.

Architecture also offers a distinctive way to explore the city’s history. The Michigan State Capitol in Lansing is one of the outstanding examples of decorative painting in the United States. A museum in Lansing celebrates the legacy of Ransom E. Olds, founder of Oldsmobile and the REO Motor Car Company. Together, these subjects offer different perspectives: historical developments spanning many eras, a 19th-century house, decorative painting and the legacy of a well-known business figure.

Science and Family Attractions

The Impression 5 Science Center is an interactive destination for families. Hands-on exhibits teach basic scientific principles. This makes the visit different from a historical exhibition: the focus here is on trying things out and exploring science in an engaging way.

For younger children, the First Impression Room is a particularly specific option. It is designed for children from birth to age four and offers opportunities to crawl, play, splash, climb, read and explore.

Potter Park Zoo covers 20 acres and is located within an 80-acre park. The difference between the zoo’s area and the park’s area gives a clear sense of scale for this visit. The zoo also offers tours; if you are interested, you can check the current dates in advance.

Old Town and Dining in Lansing

Old Town Lansing is the city’s original downtown and a boutique district. For another perspective on Lansing beyond museums and river activities, visit the Allen Farmers Market on the Eastside. Its offerings include seasonal fruit and vegetables, pasture-raised eggs, artisan and gluten-free baked goods, dried beans and cheese. There are also hot and ready-to-eat foods, local meat and fish. The market combines seasonal produce with a wide selection of other foods and prepared dishes.
