In Fitzgerald Park, the Ledges stand out as ancient sedimentary rock outcrops along the Grand River. Their riverside setting adds a geological dimension to the site. The park has three miles of nature and hiking trails and offers canoe and kayak access to the Grand River. This gives you different ways to explore the landscape, on foot or by paddle.
Lakes, Rivers, and Paddling
The waterways in Eaton County also vary considerably. Lake Interstate State Game Area covers about 123 acres. Crandell Park is home to the county’s largest lake, at just under 160 acres. Kayaks are rented there on a first-come, first-served basis. If you plan to rent one, check current availability in advance. Eaton County has about 700 acres of public land available for hunting.
Butler Park offers public boat access to the Battle Creek River. In Eaton Rapids, visitors can paddle on the Grand River. Mill Pointe Park in Eaton Rapids has kayak passage channels. These places offer different ways to enjoy a stay on or by the water, and not all the activities take place on the same river.
Museums, History, and Art
In downtown Charlotte, the Eaton County's Museum at Courthouse Square is located in the Eaton County Courthouse. Built in 1885, the building is in the Renaissance Revival style; its upper two floors currently house a public museum. Another historical perspective is offered by the Michigan's Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall & Museum, which honors the sacrifices of the “Boys in Blue” and the legacy of the Grand Army of the Republic. It is open on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as by appointment. Confirm visiting hours before your visit.
Dyer Kiln Park is home to one of the first lime kilns in Eaton County. Historic Miller Farm houses one of the largest collections of Boy Scout memorabilia in the United States. The metal sculpture “All Things” can be seen at The Commons in Grand Ledge. These places offer different points of interest, from local history and a historic lime kiln to a sculpture in a public space.
