Beaver Island combines a long paddling route with nature preserves and a layered island history. As the largest island in Lake Michigan, it is 13 miles long and 6 miles wide. The Beaver Island Water Trail circles the entire island and measures 42 miles (68 km). The island’s dimensions and paddling route are therefore two different planning considerations. When looking for a vacation rental, the first question is whether you want to focus your stay on the water, nature trails or historical themes.

Waterways and Nature Preserves

Little Sand Bay Nature Preserve includes coniferous forest, cedar swamp and dunes. A 0.4-mile trail and boardwalk lead to public access to the lake and a shallow, marshy beach. This combines exploring different habitats with a specific destination along the shore.

Miller’s Marsh is the largest and most diverse wetland on Beaver Island. Its landscape includes shallow open water, extensive sedge stands, sphagnum moss mats and an old, naturally regenerating beech-maple forest. The preserve has a one-mile trail and an interpretive brochure. The trail lengths offer a direct comparison: Little Sand Bay’s 0.4 miles versus Miller’s Marsh’s one mile. Their focuses also differ: Little Sand Bay combines a trail and boardwalk with lake access and a beach; Miller’s Marsh pairs its longer trail with a brochure about the wetland landscape.

George and Althea Petritz Nature Preserve adds another option with a trail from the road to the beach. It also provides habitat for deer, wild turkeys, threatened plants, waterfowl and migratory birds. This brings explicitly named animal and plant habitats into focus alongside dune and wetland landscapes.

Island History and Culture

The Beaver Island Historical Walking Tour uses information panels and an accompanying map to explore the island’s history. It offers a way to learn about historical themes on a walking tour with orientation materials.

The Beaver Island Print Shop Museum was built in 1850 by followers of James Jesse Strang. Feodor Protar settled on Beaver Island in 1893 and lived there until his death in 1925. The Beaver Island Marine Museum tells a maritime story: it is housed in an authentic net shed built in 1906, recalling the time when St. James Harbor was a busy commercial port. Visitors to the museum can step aboard a restored wooden gillnet boat that fished in northern waters from 1935 onward.

The Baroque on Beaver Festival adds to the cultural offerings in summer. From the last weekend in July to the first weekend in August, the program includes orchestral, chamber music and vocal performances. Since the schedule may change from year to year, check the specific event dates before your trip. If you are traveling for the festival, you can coordinate your vacation rental search with those travel dates.

Plan Your Trip and Stay
