Alpena brings together maritime heritage, museums, and paths through urban and natural areas. When planning a stay, it’s worth distinguishing between the options: historical exhibits, walking paths along the river, or routes through parks and longer trails.

Maritime History and Museums

Alpena’s historic downtown includes preserved buildings dating from around the turn of the 19th century. The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center is located in the historic city center. There, the deck of a scale-model schooner offers a maritime experience, while diving tubes recreate the experience of a shipwreck. Check the center’s current operating details before your visit.

The Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan is located in the heart of Alpena and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Its historical exhibits include an Avenue of Shops from the 1890s. The mini quarry offers a different kind of museum visit: visitors can find and take home Devonian fossils there. Check the rules for collecting before your visit. In Alpena, exhibits on regional history sit alongside an activity where you can search for fossils yourself.

River Paths and Longer Trails

The Maritime Heritage Trail is a history-focused walking path along the Thunder Bay River in downtown Alpena. Its features include a wooden boardwalk, interpretive signs, and a pedestrian bridge behind the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. The trail combines a riverside walk with historical information.

The Alpena Bi-Path has a different focus: it is about 18.5 miles long and passes through Alpena parks and beaches along the Thunder Bay River and Lake Huron. For a longer route between two places, there’s the North Eastern State Trail. This 70-mile rail trail runs between Alpena and Cheboygan. The stated lengths and routes clearly distinguish the options; if planning a trip on the North Eastern State Trail, check for current closures and seasonal conditions.

Parks and Nature in Alpena

The Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many plant, fish, and other animal species that have adapted to its changing ecosystem. The diversity of species and their adaptations bring ecological changes into focus. The features described at Island Park include nature trails, fishing platforms, and five distinctly different ecosystems. A handcrafted, covered wooden bridge connects Duck Park and Island Park; both are within Alpena city limits.

Bay View Park offers a Fine Arts Band Shell, basketball and tennis courts, a play area, a picnic area, and a walking path along the seawall. It is near Alpena’s boat harbor. Its range of facilities gives the park a different character from the nature trails at Island Park or the longer trails; the events program at the band shell may vary.

Alpena Lighthouse and Breakwall

You can see the Alpena Lighthouse from the Alpena Municipal Breakwall. The tower is currently closed to general public tours. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This distinguishes the view of the lighthouse from its historic designation: the view from the breakwall is described, but general public tours of the tower are not currently available.
