Munising Falls drops 50 feet over a sandstone cliff. A paved 800-foot path leads to the base of the waterfall and features viewing platforms. Two different trail features stand out: the paved route to the waterfall and the platforms along the visitor path.
The main visitor center for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is also located at Munising Falls. The North Country Trail National Scenic Trail is accessible from the falls. So, if you’re interested in hiking trails, you’ll find both the path to the waterfall and access to this nationally designated trail here. The site combines a visit to a specific waterfall with another opportunity to enjoy hiking.
Cycling at Munising Mountain Bike Park
The non-motorized trail system at Munising Mountain Bike Park is at the western end of Munising and can be reached from downtown by bike. Within the park, the trails described differ in purpose. The 1.5-mile Gateway Loop is ADA accessible and connects the trails to the parking lot. The Munising Bay Loop, or MBL, is an outer cross-country flow trail that loops around the park.
Another option is Flow & Steady, an optional downhill flow trail that takes riders back to the M-28 trailhead. Facilities at the bike park trailhead include a jump line, a skills park, and a pump track. If any of these are important to your plans, check in advance which features are currently available.
Boat Tours to the Sandstone Cliffs
Pictured Rocks Cruises departs from Munising City Dock in the heart of the historic downtown. This brings together a downtown departure point and a destination at the cliffs. Check departure times in advance if you’re planning a tour.
The three highlights also differ in how you plan for them: at the waterfall, the paved path and viewing platforms take center stage; at the Mountain Bike Park, the different trail types; and at City Dock, the departure for the cliffs. This lets you choose what to focus on in Munising based on the experience that matters to you during your stay, rather than treating the different destinations as one single outing.
