River access points, trails with different profiles, and 24 local history stops give a stay in Athol several clear focal points. If you’re looking for a hotel in Athol, you can plan your trip around whether the Millers River and fishing, short or longer trails, or culture should take center stage. The options vary in distance, terrain, and specific conditions.

Millers River and fishing areas

At Alan E. Rich Environmental Park, there is access to the Millers River for car-top boats—that is, boats transported on a car roof. The same park offers a short loop trail through young forest and open areas of the Millers River Wildlife Management Area. This makes it possible to include both a specific water access point and a short loop featuring two landscape types in your plans.

The Millers River Blue Trail runs between Cass Meadow in Athol and River Front Park in Orange. This describes a route between two named places, while the park on the Millers River provides access for boats. The River Rat Race takes place annually on the Millers River in Athol in spring. If the event is the reason for your trip, it’s a good idea to check the specific dates before planning.

Silver Lake Park in Athol has a beach. Fishing is permitted all along the shore of Silver Lake except in the beach area. Another fishing option is the catch-and-release area of the Millers River Wildlife Management Area. It extends from the Templeton/Athol railroad bridge to the first dam in Athol. Only artificial lures are allowed there; natural bait may not be carried. At Silver Lake, the restriction is the beach area, while at the Millers River, the section and lure rule are what matter.

Trails with different distances and conditions

A steep, quarter-mile trail leads from the main parking lot to Round Top Vista in Bearsden Conservation Area. Other trails in this conservation area lead to Newton Reservoir. In South Athol Conservation Area, the Rabbit Run Trail is flat and easy. The Barrens Loop is also a quarter-mile long, but runs over deep sand deposited by glacial Lake Orange. So Round Top Vista and Barrens Loop are the same stated length but have different surfaces: one is steep, while the other has deep sand. When choosing a trail, therefore, both the quarter-mile distance and the gradient and surface matter.

A five-mile loop trail runs through Lawton State Forest, with a two-mile Ridge section and a three-mile Forestry section. It can be accessed via the Townsend Road entrance or from Skyfields Arboretum, which is next to the Mount Grace Land Trust headquarters in Athol. At Skyfields Arboretum, the Arboretum Trail passes through different habitat types; visitors can learn about the labeled tree and shrub species there. The five-mile Lawton loop is considerably longer than the quarter-mile trails in Bearsden and South Athol.

Local history stops and exhibits

The Athol History Trail has 24 stops. At each one, a sign describes the site’s role in Athol’s history. The Athol Historical Society museum features rotating exhibits and numerous museum objects on the ground floor of a renovated historic building. The two offerings explore local history in different ways: through marked stops or through exhibits and objects. So, in addition to the river and trails, there are specific places to visit for a cultural history focus when planning your trip.
