More than 5,000 buildings and structures in the Nantucket Historic District are classified as “Contributing Structures.” The historic district encompasses Nantucket Island, Tuckernuck, and Muskeget; together, they are designated a National Historic Landmark and listed in national and state historic registers. This gives the architectural history an unusually broad scope: its focus is not on a single building, but on a historic district spanning several islands.

Architecture from several eras

The Nantucket Historic District preserves architecture from the Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian periods. These stylistic periods offer different historical perspectives on the district. At the Whaling Museum, exploration moves to nine high-quality galleries with permanent and changing exhibitions. The district’s architecture and the museum’s exhibitions thus offer different ways to get to know Nantucket’s culture.

The African Meeting House tells a particularly tangible story: it is the only public building still standing on Nantucket today that was built and used by African Americans in the 19th century. The Black Heritage Trail® includes ten stops and is divided into the Downtown and New Guinea sections. This makes it a distinct way to explore Nantucket’s African American history, with the two-part layout giving the trail a clear structure.

Maria Mitchell’s life is also represented at several historic sites. The Historic Mitchell House preserves her personal belongings, including a Dolland telescope. It offers programs about the Mitchell family’s daily life and their contributions to Nantucket’s history; individual programs may vary. Another telescope story is connected to the Vestal Street Observatory: its original dome housed a 7.5-inch telescope.

Coastal formations and trails through the island’s interior

Those who turn their attention from buildings and collections to the landscape will find striking geological formations at the Nantucket Barrier Beach and Wildlife Refuge: a rhythmic series of cuspate spits and a large, well-developed, symmetrical cuspate foreland. The area around Altar Rock reveals another aspect of the landscape. Its coastal heath includes blueberries, lowbush blueberries, Pennsylvania sedge, bearberry, reindeer lichen, and false heather.

The Middle Moors has many miles of interconnected roads and trails; access may vary depending on conditions. It is helpful to put the area figure in context: the southern part of the Middle Moors covers more than 400 acres, not the entire area. Locally, this southern section is called Nantucket’s “Serengeti.” Roads and trails thus offer a different way to experience the landscape than the coastal formations in the refuge.

Beach, sea, and seasonal experiences

Jetties Beach has shallow water and extensive sandbars at low tide. The tides therefore help shape the beach’s appearance. You can reach Jetties Beach by bicycle, and a bus also runs to the beach seasonally. If you plan to use this service, check the current schedule in advance.

At the MMA Aquarium, you can see live exhibits about the Nantucket Sound ecosystem. You can also set aside time for a tour at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge: “Where the Land Meets the Sea” lasts about two hours. Tour availability and dates may change, so it’s a good idea to check in advance if you want to include it in your plans.

Travel to the island also has a seasonal aspect. The M/V Iyanough is a seasonal high-speed passenger ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket; the crossing takes about an hour. As schedules may change, it’s worth checking the current timetable. On the island, the Sustainable Nantucket Farmers & Artisans Market offers locally grown or made products, as well as work by local artisans and food producers. Check the seasonal dates and opening hours before your trip.
