Brewster offers several distinct reasons to stay: the 1,900-acre Nickerson State Park, beaches along Cape Cod Bay, a cycling connection to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, and historic sites. Coastal scenery, nature, and history come together here in specific places and themes.

Coast and Tidal Landscape

The Town of Brewster has eleven beaches along Cape Cod Bay. The Brewster Flats show another side of the coast: at low tide, sandbars and tidal pools become visible, extending almost a mile into the bay. The changing water level shapes this landscape, making the Flats a distinctive attraction alongside the beaches. Beach access and permits are subject to seasonal conditions. Take the conditions for the relevant season into account when planning your visit.

Brewster also has four Mobi-Chair floating beach wheelchairs available for public use. Check current availability before your trip.

Bike Trails and Route Lengths

In Nickerson State Park, an eight-mile bike path connects the park to the 26-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail. The Rail Trail runs through Brewster. The two distances refer to different routes: eight miles describes the connection from the park to the Rail Trail, while 26 miles is the length of the trail itself. This distinction is useful for navigating by bike when you want to distinguish the park connection from the longer trail’s route.

Historic Sites and Craftsmanship

Brewster’s historic attractions include the Harris-Black House, dating to around 1795, and the Higgins Farm Windmill in Windmill Village. Both are open for tours. The current tour schedule is subject to change, so check it before visiting.

Also located in Windmill Village is the Hopkins Blacksmith Shop, dating to 1867. Its original wooden forge has been preserved. The shop’s restoration authentically recreates, as far as possible, a scene from the second half of the 19th century—a time when the art of blacksmithing had reached its peak worldwide. The historic sites therefore highlight different aspects: the house and windmill as places to tour, and the original forge and its historical context.

Nature Trails and Museum

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is surrounded by nature trails across 300 acres. The paths pass through woodland and salt marshes and along the shore of Cape Cod Bay. The museum presents archaeological evidence of 8,000 years of human activity. Nature and archaeology thus offer two distinct themes to explore at the same museum: the landscape and its habitats, and the long history of human activity.
