Gaithersburg offers several distinct ways to explore history and culture: railways, scientific heritage, art and market life each have their own focus. When planning a stay, consider whether you would like to focus on historic buildings, a scientific topic, art exhibitions or regional produce. This lets you shape your stay around your personal interests instead of treating the attractions as interchangeable sights.

Railway history and geodesy

The Gaithersburg Railroad Station was built in 1884; its buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The station is a tangible anchor for the city’s railway history. The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory offers a different perspective: it was built in 1899 as part of an international project to measure the wobble of the Earth around its polar axis. Here, the focus is not on railways but on a scientific question. The observatory building, the meridian marker pier and the five geodetic monuments of the International Latitude Observatory are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The two sites also differ in age: the station was built 15 years before the observatory. For the station, the year it was built and its later listing are two notable dates; for the observatory, its construction date is directly linked to its scientific purpose.

Art venues with a history of their own

The Arts Barn is a renovated stable that once housed horses on the former Tschiffely estate. It has a 99-seat theater and hosts changing art exhibitions. In the same building, the former use as a horse stable meets today’s cultural offerings. The theater’s fixed seating capacity gives a concrete sense of its size, while the art exhibitions change. At the Gaithersburg Community Museum, visitors can step inside a caboose dating from 1982. This is a different way to explore railway history than the Gaithersburg Railroad Station, whose construction date and register status provide a historical context. If you prefer to connect with the city’s history through a specific rail vehicle rather than a station building, you can take this difference into account when choosing what interests you. A caboose is a railway car.

Market life and dates

The Main Street Farmers Market offers fresh, locally grown fruit, vegetables and microgreens, as well as mushrooms, plants and flowers. Live music by local musicians and songwriters is offered on select Saturdays. The Main Street Market is a long-standing tradition in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. If live music is important to your trip, check the specific market day in advance: it is offered on select Saturdays.

Planning your stay

Getting there also offers a practical planning detail: the Gaithersburg MARC Station is ADA-accessible.
