Explore Fryeburg through the Saco River, trails in forest and river landscapes, and the history of the town and its region. Fryeburg Town Forest includes riverfront, small streams and historic stone walls, along with a paved cycling and walking trail, a nearby viewpoint, and a fall fair held since 1851. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: nature, outdoor activities or culture.

Saco River and Town Forest

The Saco River winds through Fryeburg. In summer, visitors can rent canoes, kayaks or inner tubes on the river and travel downstream to nearby places. This water activity is seasonal and available in summer. If a river trip is important to your plans, check the availability of rentals in advance.

Fryeburg Town Forest covers 74 acres, is owned by the Town of Fryeburg and is managed by the town. It includes 900 feet of riverfront along the Saco River, several small streams and historic stone walls. A one-mile trail passes through a variety of forest types. These are two different measurements: 74 acres describes the forest’s area, while one mile is the trail’s length.

The Town Forest is also home to the Silver Maple Floodplain Forest, a unique and endangered habitat. Together with its streams and riverfront, it makes the forest a distinct nature destination. The Saco River also shapes Fryeburg both as a river running through town and as the setting for summer rental activities.

Trails for Cycling and Walking

The Mountain Division Trail (Fryeburg Segment) is a four-mile paved route for family-friendly cycling or walking. The difference in length compared with the one-mile Town Forest trail offers a useful point of reference when choosing a route. The Mountain Division Trail has several access points and parking areas, some mountain views and places to rest.

The Mountain Division Trail’s ten-foot-wide paved surface is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, including those with strollers or wheelchairs. Parking is available at both trailheads and approximately halfway along the route at Porter Road.

Nearby, Jockey Cap Rock is a distinctive granite outcrop in the Saco River Valley, shaped by glaciers long ago. A short trail leads to the rock. From there, views extend across the river valley, surrounding peaks and Fryeburg. The viewpoint adds a different perspective on the landscape and surroundings to the choice of trails.

History and the Fall Fair

The Fryeburg Historical Society’s museum and library are located at 83 Portland Street, Fryeburg, Maine 04037. The society collects and preserves information about the history of Fryeburg, the Fryeburg region, Oxford County and Maine. Its collections include articles, publications and artifacts that illustrate customs and ways of life from earlier times. Its focus therefore extends beyond local history to include other regional perspectives.

Fryeburg has hosted the Fryeburg Fair, an agricultural fall fair, since 1851. Its events include tractor competitions, evening concerts, sheepdog demonstrations, and long-distance skillet and anvil throwing. The fair adds an autumn highlight alongside summer rental activities on the Saco River. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the specific event dates in advance.

You can plan a trip to Fryeburg around the season and your interests: In summer, boat and inner-tube rentals on the river take center stage; in fall, the agricultural fair shapes the cultural offerings. Forest trails, the Mountain Division Trail and the viewpoint at Jockey Cap Rock offer other points of interest, with route lengths and features you can weigh separately.
