Manchester brings together several distinct travel themes: wildlife areas and pond landscapes, a trail network with varying difficulty levels, and a landmark that is almost 200 years old. Lakeside Orchards adds apple growing to the mix. If you’re looking for accommodation, it’s worth first deciding whether wildlife watching, exercise, water or local history will shape your stay.

Ponds, Wildlife and Wetlands

The Tyler Pond Wildlife Management Area covers 128 acres and is managed as a wildlife management area. An agreement provides for reasonable public access to Tyler Pond and Lily Pond for fishing and recreational boating. These activities are limited to the two ponds; check current access restrictions before making plans.

The Jamies Pond Wildlife Management Area is an 800-acre upland area around a 100-acre coldwater fishery, located in Farmingdale, Hallowell and Manchester. The two acreage figures refer to different things: the size of the upland area and that of the coldwater fishery. Herons, hawks, loons, ospreys and other songbirds live in the area; individual sightings are not guaranteed on every visit. Wildlife and fishing are two distinct nature themes here.

Gannett Woods offers a different focus: on 48-acre Shedd Pond, there are about 1.15 miles of undeveloped shoreline and extensive wetlands in Manchester. Gannett Woods focuses on shoreline and wetlands, while Jamies Pond focuses on birdlife and coldwater fishing.

Trails and Getting Around

The Allen-Whitney Memorial Forest has a 7.60-mile trail network with trails ranging from easy to moderate. The figure describes the size of the network; the difficulty rating provides separate guidance for choosing a trail.

Trailhead parking at the Allen-Whitney Memorial Forest is available at the North Manchester Meeting House on Scribner Hill Road. The North Manchester Meeting House has stood as a Manchester landmark for almost 200 years. This makes the trailhead’s location a practical reference point as well as a link to local history. Since parking rules can change, check the current arrangements before your trip.

Orchards and an Autumn Festival

Lakeside Orchards covers 189 acres and has several thousand apple trees. Apple growing is therefore a distinct focus alongside the natural areas and trails.

An older local description mentions a retail shop operated by Lakeside Orchards on Route 17. Check whether it is currently open before visiting. Manchester’s Apple Festival was held annually in the fall at Lakeside Orchards. If you’re considering the festival as a reason to travel, check current dates and access before planning your trip around it.

The sites differ clearly in the nature experience they offer: Tyler Pond and Lily Pond are associated with fishing and recreational boating; Jamies Pond with birdlife and the coldwater fishery; and Gannett Woods with shoreline and wetlands. For exercise, the Allen-Whitney Memorial Forest trail network is the relevant focus.
