Get to know Windham Center through its local history and the landscape of Black Brook Preserve. Historic school and community buildings, museums, and a municipal playground offer different points of interest. For your planning, this means Windham combines local history with a landscape of trails, hills, trees, and streams. You can choose whether historic spaces and collections or time outdoors should shape your stay more.

Local History in School and Community Buildings

The Old Town House Museum was the town’s original town hall. The Old Town Hall was built in 1833 as the first town hall and later converted into a small museum, a meeting room, and a research center.

The one-room Village School stands on the Village Green. Its 19th-century classroom displays desks, chalkboards, and a wood-burning stove; exhibits also include old slates and McGuffey Readers. These furnishings bring the character of the room to life: furniture, writing materials, and a source of heat are all part of the classroom setting on display. The Village School is open to the public by appointment. Arrange your visit in advance.

The Old Grocery was built in the early 19th century and was originally a tailor shop owned by historian and writer William Goold. As the Village Green Old Grocery Museum, it recreates a general store from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Artifacts from the society’s collections complement the exhibit. This offers a comparison across time: the building dates to the early 19th century, while the store it portrays belongs to a later era.

The Old Town Library was built before 1850 and served as the library of Windham Center until 1972. Today it is the third museum maintained by the society. It contains furnishings from the original library and other exhibits. The two buildings offer different points of interest: the Village School focuses on the classroom and its teaching materials, while the Old Town Library highlights the furnishings of the former library.

Trails, Landscape, and Play Areas

Black Brook Preserve is a 105-acre protected area in Windham Center. Its trail network includes gentle hills, old trees, and streams, and its wildlife and plant life are diverse. This gives you a clear focus on nature, distinct from the historic rooms and collections.

Town Hall Park & Playground is on the Windham Center side of Windham Town Hall and has swings, slides, climbing structures, and a covered picnic area. Comparing it with Black Brook Preserve makes their different focuses clear: the park brings together play equipment and a picnic area, while the preserve offers a trail network through a diverse landscape.
