Bayou Lafourche tells a story of connections between communities in southern Louisiana: once, it served as an important 100-mile waterway. In Lafourche Parish, you can encounter its history and Cajun culture in museums and on guided boat tours; wetlands and seasonal wildlife viewing offer a different focus. This makes it possible to discover the region through both its history and its landscapes.
History and Culture along the Bayou
The Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux explores everyday Cajun life. Its exhibits cover recreation, clothing, home furnishings, religion, cuisine, and fishing. The center also offers ranger-led boat tours on Bayou Lafourche. You will need a car to get to the center. The dock for these boat tours is currently not wheelchair accessible.
The E.D. White Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark on the banks of Bayou Lafourche, offers another perspective on history. Its exhibit explores the history of the Chitimacha Indigenous people, Acadian settlers, slavery and sugarcane plantations, as well as the White family. A guided historic boat tour on Bayou Lafourche also visits the E.D. White Historic Site.
In Lockport, the Bayou Lafourche Folklife & Heritage Museum focuses on the region’s human history, cultural and natural heritage, arts, and folk customs. The interactive three-dimensional exhibit “Bayou Excursion: 1910” offers a glimpse into life along Bayou Lafourche. The Center for Traditional Louisiana Boat Building in Lockport also makes materials available to the public: photographs, slides, oral history recordings, and artifacts.
Historic Sites and Events
Laurel Valley offers historic village tours daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.—seven days a week. Advance booking is recommended. The Laurel Valley Acadian Heritage Spring Festival takes place annually on the fourth Sunday in April at the historic Laurel Valley Store & Museum in Thibodaux. As the date and program may change, it’s worth checking the latest information before your visit.
La Fete Des Vieux Temps is also part of Lafourche Parish’s events calendar. This long-running event features music, dancing, Cajun cuisine, and an arts and crafts exhibit. Dates and programming may vary. The festival offers a different glimpse into cultural traditions than the museum exhibits, with music, dance, and crafts alongside food.
Wetlands and Seasonal Nature
The Coastal Wetlands Park near Port Fourchon encompasses more than 100 acres of purpose-built wetlands. An artificial tidal creek runs through the park and is suitable for kayaking. The park is open to the public from sunrise to sunset; rules and conditions may change, so check the latest notices before your visit.
The Lockport Elevated Wetlands Boardwalk offers a different view of the landscape. The 440-foot-long boardwalk winds through a swamp with native plants and wildlife. Wildlife viewing takes on a seasonal focus: in spring, you can see the Louisiana iris in bloom; in fall, bald eagles return. In Port Fourchon, native birds such as herons and brown pelicans can be spotted almost year-round.
Port Fourchon also has the Irvin P. Melancon Recreational Boat Launch for boating excursions. This free public launch has a kayak launch and ADA-compliant ramps. It is a separate option for launching a boat; kayaking at Coastal Wetlands Park, by contrast, refers to its tidal creek.
Cajun Cuisine and Discoveries for Kids
The Cajun Bayou Food Trail includes restaurants, culinary festivals, and events in Lafourche Parish. You can download a pass and map and follow the trail markers. Complete five stops, submit your pass, and you can receive a free T-shirt. As program details may change, check the latest terms if you plan to claim this reward.
In Thibodaux, the Bayou Country Children’s Museum is an interactive museum with a learning environment for children ages 2 to 12. It complements the historical exhibits and nature experiences with its own approach to discovery and learning.
