A depot dating from 1894, a cast-concrete town hall, and a village museum with eight buildings give Zachary a distinct historical focus. There is also a Saturday market, a walking trail in Youth Park, and golf courses with varied scenery. Zachary brings together local history and time outdoors. Depending on the day of your visit, the market may set the tone; historic sites and golf add further interests to your stay.
Buildings and Local History
The Zachary Railroad Depot was built in 1894 and is the oldest building on Main Street. Zachary Old Town Hall shows another side of the city: the building was completed in 1931, made of cast concrete, to house the city’s administrative and jail functions. Old Town Hall features information about the history of local residents and places, as well as the original council table; museum content may change.
Zachary Historic Village adds to these perspectives as a community museum with eight buildings spanning two city blocks in the historic town center. It offers a picture of small-town neighborhood life from the late 19th century through the 1960s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The three sites have different focuses: architectural history at the depot, municipal functions and local history at Old Town Hall, and neighborhood life over a longer period at the Village.
Market and Local Offerings
The Zachary Community Farmer’s Market is an open-air market in the center of Zachary. Local farmers sell fresh produce there every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday morning is therefore a practical anchor for planning your day; check the weekly details before you travel. More than 60 local vendors, including artisans, are part of the market. The number of vendors may change. Alongside fresh produce, the market also offers a connection to local crafts.
Remembrance and Time Outdoors
Regional Veterans Park has a memorial wall with approximately 400 bricks. The names and service information of local veterans are engraved on the bricks. This site adds a distinct theme to the history of buildings and neighborhoods: remembrance of people from the region.
Zachary Youth Park has a half-mile walking trail. For golf enthusiasts, two courses offer different experiences: BREC’s Beaver Creek Golf Club is a public 18-hole golf facility in Zachary; the back nine holes run through protected wetlands. Copper Mill Golf Club is a links-style golf course that winds through grasses, wetlands, and marshland. Check tee times at Beaver Creek before you travel; course conditions at Copper Mill may change.
