Hazard lies on the North Fork of the Kentucky River, and Hazard-Perry County is designated a Kentucky Trail Town. Perry County encompasses lush green mountains, winding streams, and abundant wildlife. Together, these features set the scene for a stay among rivers, trails, and regional history.
River Trails and Interpretive Trails
The North Fork River Trail runs about five miles from the area behind Hazard City Hall to the Perry County Park boat launch. The Perry Park Trail System, meanwhile, includes 6.25 miles of self-guided interpretive trails. This offers two distinct options: a shorter route with clearly named endpoints and a longer, self-guided trail experience.
Beyond these specific trails, Perry County offers miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for hunting and fishing. Public river access points offer options for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. The choices range from trail routes to activities at river access points, with no single route serving all of these pursuits.
Coal, Timber, and Remembrance
The Perry County Museum preserves and honors the history of the coal and timber industries. The annual Black Gold Festival also celebrates Kentucky’s “black gold.” Festival dates may change.
Another story of remembrance lies behind the Bobby Davis Museum: Lawrence Davis founded it in memory of his son and other veterans who died in World War II. The Heritage Herb Garden is one of the features of Bobby Davis Park. During the summer months, games, food, music, and theater performances take place there. The program may change from year to year.
Parks and Activities in Hazard
Perry County Park has an outdoor swimming pool and a miniature golf course. The operation of these seasonal amenities may vary. The park also has a boat ramp providing access to the Kentucky River. If you plan to use the water access, check local conditions at the ramp before you arrive.
Private swimming and yoga lessons are offered at the Hazard Pavilion. Since program availability should be checked before your visit, it’s a good idea to ask about the lessons you want in advance.
Market and Demonstrations
The Perry County Farmers Market is a seasonal market in downtown Hazard, next to Triangle Park. Ray and Dot Collins bring a grain mill to the market for demonstrations; demonstrations may vary. The market and demonstration are two distinct features: the market is a seasonal fixture, while the mill adds a changing demonstration.
