Two distinct waterscapes meet in Cumberland County: the Cumberland River shapes river trails, fishing opportunities, and events; the upper reaches of Dale Hollow Lake also extend into the county. The lake stretches across the state line between Kentucky and Tennessee. Trails and protected areas offer additional perspectives—from long routes for a range of activities to designated areas for observing nature.
River Trails and Routes for Every Pace
The Cumberland River Trail is 76 miles long in total, with a 30-mile section running through Cumberland County. These figures distinguish the trail’s total length from the portion within the county. One starting point is next to Veterans Memorial Park. Markers along the Cumberland River Trail identify its location and historically significant sites, including former landing places of the steamboat Cumberland River Queen.
Another connection is the Burkesville and Alpine Hill Trail: Its 6.5 miles can be explored on foot, by running, or by bike. The trail connects the central business district with the Cumberland River Trail. For a ride on two wheels, there is also the Explore Cumberland County Trail. This 105-mile motorcycle route runs through the county, past the Cumberland River and Dale Hollow Lake, and over Alpine Hill.
The Cumberland River also offers a distinctive seasonal attraction: cold-water fishing is possible there even during hot summer months. The river is home to trophy-sized brown trout and numerous rainbow trout. Fishing conditions and regulations may change; check current local requirements before fishing.
Forest, Cave, and Park Trails
Marrowbone State Forest and Wildlife Management Area covers 1,983 acres in Metcalfe and Cumberland counties and is located off Highway 90. The area is open from sunrise to sunset for hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, and photography. Hunting is also permitted under statewide regulations. At Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park, the Eagle Point Trail is the main birdwatching trail.
The same state resort park has more than 12 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, unless otherwise indicated by signs. Availability may vary depending on posted signs. For a different perspective on the area around the trails, guided wild cave tours are offered at Cindy Cave. Scheduled tours run from Memorial Day through Labor Day; check the current schedule before your trip.
The park also has a gently sloping concrete boat launch ramp and two parking lots for boat trailers. Use of the ramp and parking availability may be affected by local conditions. If you’d rather plan a round of golf than a water excursion, Dale Hollow Lake State Park Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course. Its facilities include five sets of tees, practice greens, a practice bunker, and a driving range; course conditions and facilities may change.
Events Throughout the Year
The event calendar pairs the river with local celebrations. The annual River Festivus takes place on the third weekend in August. The Mighty Cumberland River Run features races in kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards; the Festivus Float is also on the program. During River Festivus, the Cumberland Queen Riverboat Revue at Veterans Memorial Park celebrates Burkesville’s river heritage. Check dates and the current program before you travel.
The Cumberland River Bluegrass Festival begins on the third Thursday in September. It features free bluegrass music, arts and crafts, food, a 5K run, and a river duck race. The Cumberland County Fair and Horse Show is held every July at Burkesville City Park, featuring a horse show, 4-H exhibits, rides, and a demolition derby. The annual Fourth of July celebration is also connected to the river: a canoe and kayak race is held on the Cumberland River at Veterans Memorial Park. Dates and program details for recurring events may change.
Nature trails, river history, and seasonal events offer different ways to discover the county. Which one shapes your visit depends on whether you’d rather explore a route, watch birds, fish, or experience an event in Burkesville.
