Allen County offers two distinct perspectives on south-central Kentucky: the gently rolling rural landscape around Barren River Lake and the historic traces in Scottsville. The story ranges from the history of the county seat to details of individual buildings; at the lake, fishing and boating take center stage. Which side interests you more can shape the focus of your trip.

Scenery and Activities at Barren River Lake

Barren River Lake is set amid the rural, gently rolling landscapes of Allen, Barren, and Monroe counties in south-central Kentucky. Scottsville serves as a reference point: the lake’s dam is 12 miles east of the city on State Highway 252. Another notable spot is Barren River VPA #3, at the border between Allen County and Warren County.

At Barren River Lake, Port Oliver has a 2,400-foot-long, ADA-accessible promenade with spots for fishing and mooring boats. The range of fish species is also specific: hybrid striped bass, striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bream are caught in the lake. The variety of fish makes the lake a destination for anglers with different interests.

There is a boat ramp at every recreation area around the lake. Several full-service marinas offer boat rentals, among other services; check local operating details before your trip. Fishing and boating are two clear ways to enjoy the lake, without having to commit to just one way of exploring it.

Scottsville: History in Places and Buildings

The Scottsville Public Spring provided the plentiful water that influenced the choice of the site as the county seat in 1816. All but three buildings in the Downtown Historic District are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Scottsville is also included in the “Take the Roads Less Traveled” heritage tourism brochure and map.

The original Scottsville Train Depot was built in 1886 and served as a passenger and freight depot for nearly 90 years. It still stands a short distance along East Main Street from Scottsville’s historic center. Its construction date, former use, and present location on the street tell different parts of the same transportation story.

The Allen County Historical Society Museum preserves historically significant artifacts and memorabilia from Allen County. The Halcomb House tells another story: Scottsville’s history and modern medicine. The original house was built in 1900; in 2018, the building and its grounds were listed in the National Register of Historical Places.

The Halcomb House’s construction is also noteworthy in its specifics: its exterior walls are made of worm-eaten chestnut logs. Chestnut was also used for the beams, paneling, and floors. A second historic brick house is associated with Dr. Pellie Graves. The Allen County Historical Society acquired his former home and medical office in 1991; built in the Craftsman and Prairie styles, the building dates to 1909 or shortly before and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 2001.

The Allen County Rosenwald School offers a glimpse into another part of local history. The 36 Ă— 23-foot schoolhouse is connected to the Black history of Scottsville and Allen County. The Allen County, Kentucky African American Heritage Council saved the building from deterioration.

Events and Outdoor Discoveries

Scottsville hosts the annual Kentucky State Gospel Singing Convention. The LIVE at the Lyric Concert Series has also been announced as an upcoming arts program in Scottsville. Check event dates before your trip if you’d like to plan around one of these events.

With a different focus, Dugas Park adds another dimension to the area: the nonprofit park covers 346 acres and was founded in Scottsville by the Dugas family in 2014. Its offerings include trails and outdoor concerts. You can choose among Scottsville’s historic sites, events, and activities at Barren River Lake to tailor your trip to the interests that appeal to you most.
