Explore Lenexa through several clearly distinct highlights: Black Hoof Park is home to Lake Lenexa, while other attractions focus on trails around Rose’s Pond, labeled trees, disc golf and historic sites. When deciding what to do, you might first consider whether you want to focus on water and fishing, activity in the park or history.
Water, Trails and Disc Golf
Black Hoof Park covers 231 acres and includes the 35-acre deep-water Lake Lenexa. For travelers planning to fish, Lake Lenexa is the main attraction. Visitors can fish in the lake, which is stocked with catfish, black crappie, sun perch, sunfish and largemouth bass.
The Evan Knaus Memorial Tree Walk offers a different kind of discovery. Nearly three dozen trees are marked with plaques showing typical leaves and listing the trees’ key characteristics. Unlike fishing at the lake, this walk is all about tree leaves and features described in more detail on the plaques.
Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park has jogging and walking paths around Rose’s Pond. This makes walking or jogging around the pond a distinct activity alongside fishing at Lake Lenexa. Disc golf also offers a choice based on specific differences: Lenexa has three courses—one 9-hole course at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, and one 9-hole and one 18-hole course at Black Hoof Park. Both parks therefore have a 9-hole course, with an additional 18-hole course at Black Hoof Park.
Historic Sites and Their Stories
The historic complex in Lenexa’s Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park includes the Legler Barn, the Lenexa Train Depot, the Strang Line Waiting Station and a replica of a 1900s-era bandstand. The Legler Barn Museum & Depot includes a restored Lenexa Train Depot, which displays artifacts from transportation and railroad history.
The Legler Barn was built in 1864 and reconstructed at its present site in 1983. The two dates mark distinct stages: the original construction and the later reconstruction at its current location. Lenexa’s original downtown area also includes many buildings that are over 100 years old. Together, a specifically dated building and a larger group of older buildings provide historic points of interest.
Market and Festival
The Lenexa Farmers Market has a clear rule about product origin: only products grown or raised locally, produced within 250 miles, or made anywhere in Kansas are sold. Seasonal dates and the participation of individual vendors may change; check both before your visit.
The family-oriented Lenexa Spinach Festival features food, music, entertainment, hands-on activities and craft booths. If the festival is a reason for your trip, check the event date before planning your stay around it.
