The Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area preserves native sand sage prairie that has not been converted to irrigated farmland. The area is also home to the oldest publicly owned bison herd in Kansas. Greater prairie-chickens, mule deer, quail, and western hognose snakes also find habitat there. The sand sage prairie and bison together shape the character of this natural area.

Visitors who want to see bison and other attractions can take a tour by reservation. Self-guided tours are currently unavailable. Confirm your reservation and current operating information before your trip. Limited fishing is available at the sandpit pond in the northern part of the area; it depends on water conditions and seasonal fish stocking.

Trails and nature within Garden City

In the Garden City area, Forest Park Lake combines natural surroundings with walking trails: the 16-acre nature park provides habitat for wildlife. A paved 1/3-mile loop trail circles the lake, and a sidewalk offers direct access to the Talley Trail. This gives visitors two options at different scales: a loop by the lake and a longer greenway through the city.

The paved Talley Trail is 3.7 miles long and crosses nearly all of Garden City from east to west. It starts near Garden City Community College and runs through shopping and residential areas as a bike-friendly route. Those seeking a trail in an urban setting will find a different experience here than at Forest Park Lake nature park. The different trail lengths make it easy to tailor an outing to your schedule, without assuming a particular walking or cycling time.

Wildlife viewing and a seasonal swimming pool

At Lee Richardson Zoo, visitors can enjoy an experience that takes them through the zoo by car. The Finnup Center for Conservation Education features animal habitats and interactive exhibits. Admission to the zoo is free for pedestrians; check current operating conditions before your visit. Wildlife viewing and exhibits offer different ways to explore the natural world.

The Big Pool offers another way to spend time outdoors. The facility has five slides, a diving well, and a divider that splits the pool into a north and south half. Operations are seasonal and may vary. The pool also has a notable history: Garden City residents dug it by hand in 1921, and its first season began in 1922.

History brought to life on site

The Finney County Historical Museum features an exhibit on the Santa Fe Trail, explaining its history and connections to Southwest Kansas. Museum admission is free; confirm current details before your trip. The William D. and Luticia Fulton House is located southwest of the Finney County Historical Museum in Lee Richardson Zoo. The Pleasant Valley One-Room Schoolhouse was built around 1890 and offers another historical point of interest.

Events also bring different aspects of the region to life. Beef Empire Days’ Ranch Rodeo features roping, riding, and ranch work. The annual Merck Live Show is for anyone interested in the cattle-feeding industry. Beef Empire Days holds more than a dozen events each year, including a family-friendly carnival. Check event dates in advance if you’re planning your visit around them.

Other events focus on different themes: the Finney County Pioneer Awards Banquet is held every April and is open to the public. Evening in the Past centers on dinner on the museum patio and a historical reenactment on a Saturday evening in late May. Tickets are available from the museum office; details may vary.

Art and other interests

Garden City Arts presents rotating exhibits featuring works by local and regional artists; gallery admission is free. The gift gallery offers a wide selection of art by Kansas artisans. The Mercer Gallery broadens the perspective with exhibitions by regional, national, and international artists. Hands-on workshops and artist talks are also offered, though individual programs may vary. Together, the galleries span everything from local and regional works to a broader artistic range.

Golf enthusiasts will find a driving range and short-game area at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. The course also hosts the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am. This specific sporting option complements nature trails, wildlife viewing, history, and art, so a visit need not focus on just one interest.
