Story City is a destination for travelers who want to explore local history through buildings, museums and specific places. Walking paths, a cycling trail and activities on the Skunk River are also possible focuses. When planning, you can decide whether cultural history, time in the parks or activities on the water should take priority during your stay.

Parks and Water

Story City’s parks are open daily from sunrise to sunset. South Park offers several ways to connect with the river: the park has a path and viewpoints along the riverbank, and there is also a canoe access point at the Skunk River dam. This means you can choose between a walk with river views and an activity on the water.

Jacobson Park South and Prairie Park also each have their own features. Jacobson Park South has a paved cycling path. Prairie Park has a walking path through restored prairie. The contrast makes the differences clear: one has a paved cycling route, while the other has a footpath through a restored landscape. Depending on your interests, you can prioritize cycling, walking or the river.

For another perspective on the Skunk River, there is the South Skunk River Water Trail in Story City. It is 33 miles long and has eleven access points. Its length and number of access points give this waterway a different scale from the individual paths in the parks. If you are interested in activities on the water, you can therefore consider both the features of local parks and the broader course of the Water Trail when planning your trip.

Museums and Architectural History

The Story City Historical Society comprises four museums. The Bartlett House Museum is a Queen Anne-style house built in 1903. The Carriage House Museum features exhibits about pioneer life. The Story City Museum is housed in a restored historic waterworks building and features exhibits about businesses and services that were once located in the community’s Main Street District. These three examples lead from a specific architectural style to pioneer history and then to the town’s former business community.

The Sheldall Schoolhouse adds an architectural history linked to immigration and building materials: newly arrived Norwegian farmers built the schoolhouse in 1860 from timber they had cut along the Skunk River. Craftsmanship and design take center stage at the Story City Antique Carousel. The hand-carved wooden carousel dates from 1913 and is located in North Park. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Story Theater Grand Opera House is also listed there; this historic designation says nothing about the venue’s current operations.

Travel Timing and Event Dates

Scandinavian Days takes place on the first weekend in June. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates for your travel year before finalizing your stay. This helps distinguish the recurring time of year from the actual dates planned for your trip.
