A hand-built chapel, a reconstructed Viking house, and a windmill tell stories in Shelby of European immigration that cannot be reduced to dates. Morning Star Chapel reflects the faith and craftsmanship of Danish immigrants. VikingHjem reconstructs a Viking house from around 900 AD and illustrates how early Scandinavian families lived and worked. Here, you can encounter both traditional craftsmanship and a vivid portrayal of everyday life in earlier centuries.
Discover Danish History
The Danish Windmill also reveals Danish history on several levels. Daily tours combine a short documentary about the mill’s reconstruction with a self-guided tour afterward. The tour includes the lower three floors, a gallery on the second floor, and an observation platform on the fourth floor. As the schedule may change, it’s a good idea to check current tour times before your visit.
The culinary side of the story includes Kringle Man Bakery, which makes traditional Danish baked goods, including freshly made kringle, bread, and sweet treats. The Danish Windmill and the bakery thus showcase different aspects of Danish tradition: the history of a building and a continuing baking tradition.
The Museum of Danish America adds another dimension, with three exhibition levels in its main building. Right next to the museum, the Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park encompasses 30 acres of restored prairie. Moving between the exhibits and the restored landscape makes cultural history and prairie two distinct themes to explore during your visit.
Farmsteads, Festivals, and Regional Traditions
The Carstens 1880 Farmstead encompasses an 80-acre agricultural exhibition site, including the original, fully furnished Carstens family home. Held annually on the first weekend after Labor Day, Carstens Farm Days features steam threshing, antique machinery, parades, arts and crafts, food, and entertainment. Event dates may change, so check the current schedule before you travel.
Elk Horn and Kimballton host Tivoli Fest every Memorial Day weekend. The festival celebrates Danish cultural heritage with food, music, and a full program of events; details may change. In Elk Horn, the annual Julefest is also part of the Danish calendar: baked goods, Scandinavian specialties, and Danish Christmas traditions are at the heart of the festival. For events, it’s worth checking current dates and program details.
German history is also visible in the region. The German Villages Tour includes Defiance, Earling, Panama, Portsmouth, and Westphalia; the German heritage of these communities is especially evident in their historic churches. In Westphalia, German craftsmen began building St. Boniface Catholic Church in 1881. St. Boniface parish was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district in 1991. Another historic downtown is the Historic Harlan Downtown Square, laid out around the Shelby County Courthouse and encompassing a 51-building district.
Railroad history has its own landmarks: the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Stone Arch Viaduct is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Shelby Bridge is considered the first railroad structure built in Shelby County. These structures add another historical dimension to the stories of immigration and local communities.
Prairie, Water, and Trails
Prairie Rose State Park is set in the rolling landscape of southwestern Iowa and covers 422 acres. Prairie Rose Lake spans 218 acres and offers boating, as well as a beach for swimming. The combination of lake and parkland provides a clear contrast to the historic buildings and exhibits.
There are several other places to enjoy nature and get active. Shelby Wetland is used for wildlife viewing and outdoor environmental education; activities there also include cycling, walking, and roller skating. Elk Horn Creek Recreation Site, locally known as “The Grove,” is a nature preserve and campground with trails for easy hikes. As operations are seasonal and may change, check current information before visiting.
The Museum of Danish America’s Genealogy & Education Center offers resources for researching family history. Appointments are available most Fridays, so arrange your visit in advance. Tours of the Leland and McIntosh cabins are available during the Shelby County Historical Museum’s opening hours. Check the museum’s current hours ahead of time.
