Ayrshire can be explored through three distinct interests: the waters of Silver Lake, prairie and wetland landscapes, and local history. Fishing and boating go hand in hand with hiking and birdwatching; the town’s history dates back to the railroad in 1882. You can first decide whether you are considering Ayrshire for its natural attractions or its local history.

Silver Lake and Prairie Landscapes

Silver Lake is a recreational area in Ayrshire used for fishing and boating. It offers a clear focus for a trip centered on activities on the water. The prairie and wetland landscape reveals another side of the destination.

The Glacial Ridge Wildlife Area illustrates the Des Moines Lobe landform, with high ridges and low-lying marshes. Parts of Telford Prairie also offer a glimpse of the distinctive character of this landscape: they are preserved areas that have never been plowed, providing habitat for a wide variety of animal and plant species.

Hiking and birdwatching are permitted at Telford Prairie. Depending on your interests, you can focus on walking or observing wildlife. The connection to nature is therefore not limited to descriptions of the landscape: the permitted activities also appeal to different interests.

Salton Park in Ayrshire has four shelters, flush toilets, a fish-cleaning station, and access to Silver Lake. For a stay focused on fishing, lake access and the fish-cleaning station are two specific features to note; the shelters and toilets add to the park’s amenities.

Another named landscape is Larson Prairie, 2.5 miles southeast of Ayrshire. It includes 34 acres of wetlands and higher ground for hunting. The area’s information therefore includes both a specific distance and different types of terrain.

Railroad and Local History

The railroad’s history can be traced by month: the Des Moines & Fort Dodge Railway Company reached Ayrshire in October 1882, and the railroad depot was built in November of the same year. The arrival and depot construction were therefore two events one month apart. The railroad also acquired 80 acres for the town of Ayrshire.

The history of Ayrshire United Methodist Church also spans several stages. The church was founded in 1888 and dissolved effective December 31, 2014. The sale of the property was also recommended. These dates give local history a longer arc without conflating the founding with the later end of the congregation.

Another aspect of local history concerns the school: the Ayrshire school building closed one year before the Ayrshire School District ended. Together with the railroad and church dates, this sequence shows different stages of local history, from the development of the town to later changes in local institutions.

Choose Your Stay Based on Your Interests

If you are considering Ayrshire as a destination, you can choose a focus based on your interests: Silver Lake offers fishing and boating, Telford Prairie offers hiking and birdwatching, and the town’s history has several specific dates to put things in context. When searching for a vacation rental, this is a useful first step toward deciding what kind of stay you want.
