At the East Nishnabotna River, a picture of Page County emerges that brings river access and trails together. Elsewhere, the range extends from a long trail with more than 70 bridges to a one-mile concrete path. Add educational and history museums, a summer baseball team, and an annual festival. Together, these offer several clear focal points for planning your trip.

Trails and Water at Different Scales

Rapp Park covers about 207 acres and lies along the East Nishnabotna River. About 2.5 miles of trails run through the park, which also offers river access. The trail length offers a direct comparison with Pierce Creek Recreation Area, where the multi-use trails cover about seven miles and are longer. If you are primarily comparing trail distances, the difference between the two areas is clear.

The two areas also differ in their connection to the water. Pierce Creek Recreation Area has a 30-acre lake where fishing is available. The campground includes horse pens and an obstacle course for general use. The trail length, fishing, and campground facilities each give the area its own focus.

The Wabash Trace Nature Trail runs through Page County. It is a 63-mile rail-trail corridor with more than 70 bridges. The Clarinda Community Trail is on a different scale: it is one mile long, eight feet wide, and made of concrete. The two trails represent very different distances and construction styles, while the Wabash Trace is also distinguished by its bridges and former railroad route.

The Page County Conservation Office's education center complements the nature-related attractions with exhibits on native species currently found in Iowa and extinct native species. The range of nature discoveries thus extends from trails and river access to information about the state's wildlife.

Museums: Music, Art, and Regional History

Clarinda is home to the Glenn Miller Birthplace Museum: the 3,000-square-foot museum is next to Glenn Miller's birthplace. Its exhibits cover his rise to stardom, his service in World War II, and the influence of his music over the decades. The focus thus ranges from the musician's biography to his lasting impact.

Also in Clarinda is the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum, housed in the restored 1909 Carnegie Library. Music history and art offer two distinct ways to explore the city's culture, while the historic library building is part of the art museum's character.

The Nodaway Valley Historical Museum is dedicated to the history of Page County, Iowa, the state, and the United States. Its thousands of artifacts are preserved and displayed. The museum was founded in 1988, offering a regional perspective that also takes a broader view of history.

In Shenandoah, the Shenandoah Veterans Memorial Museum preserves local history through exhibits, educational lectures, and interactive workshops. The Greater Shenandoah Historical Society offers a different kind of historical discovery: it displays Homer the Mammoth along with several Ice Age fossils. Shenandoah's radio history also shapes the city's identity: it was once called “Radio City” and continues to offer entertainment.

Summer Baseball and an Annual Festival

The Clarinda Iowa A’s are a college summer baseball team founded in 1954 and a member of the MINK League. League membership may change. The team's founding in 1954 and seasonal schedule are key points of reference.

The annual Clarinda Craft Carnival adds a festival featuring food vendors to the local experiences. Vendor participation may vary from one year to the next. Regional history, art, music, nature, and seasonal events thus represent different aspects of a stay in Page County.
