About 13,000 years ago, the Wisconsin Glacier formed Ocheyedan Mound. The natural area is preserved and used as an outdoor classroom. This connects its geological origins with an educational purpose today. Traditionally, the mound is considered an observation point and a place of mourning for Indigenous people.
Porphyry, granite, Sioux quartzite, and limestone can be found at Ocheyedan Mound. The vegetation includes little bluestem and sideoats grama. These rocks, grasses, and the site's use as an outdoor classroom offer different perspectives on the same place.
Landscapes and Trails
The Osceola County Conservation Board manages around 1,900 acres of public land, most of which is open to public hunting. Hiking trails in Osceola County pass through wetlands, wooded areas, and upland habitats. This means different types of landscapes can be found side by side in the county.
The Ed Winkel Memorial Trail is a 4.7-mile gravel trail. The 33-acre Ocheyedan Pits Recreation Area offers a different focus: Amenities include a picnic shelter, restrooms, and water, as well as camping, fishing, swimming, and a nature trail. If you want to assess a single trail by its length and surface, those details are available for the Ed Winkel Memorial Trail; at the Pits, several recreational activities come together in one recreation area.
Local History in Ocheyedan, Ashton, and Sibley
The Tracy House in Ocheyedan contains items donated by the local community from before 1902. In Ashton, the DeBoer Grocery Museum on Main Street houses artifacts from DeBoer's Grocery Store, Knutsen's Clothing Store, Hoffman's Shoe Repair, and St. Joseph's Grade School and High School. The collection brings together memories of shops, crafts, and schools.
The McCallum Museum and Brunson Heritage House are located in Sibley's Central City Park. Together with the collections in Ocheyedan and Ashton, these places offer several tangible points of connection to local history.
Recreation with a Distinctive Character
Sibley Golf and Country Club is a 9-hole course with a par of 36 and a length of 3,345 yards from the back tees. The Iowa Golf Association named it “Course of the Year” and the best 9-hole golf course in Iowa. Its length, par, and award give the course a clearly defined profile.
Sibley Outdoor Aquatic Center features a splash pool, a zero-depth entry, a lazy river, water slides, a diving tower, a log roll, and an AquaClimb. Programs include swimming lessons, water aerobics, lap and recreational swimming, and regular open swim; operations may vary seasonally.
Sibley's parks also offer a variety of features: Sunrise Park includes a natural area, a pergola with a picnic table, a trail, and benches. Robinson Pond in Sam Robinson Memorial Park is stocked with several fish species.
Accommodation and Getting Around
The Osceola County Board of Supervisors acquired Hawkeye Point in 2008 with the goal of keeping the area permanently accessible to the public. Hawkeye Point Campground has 12 sites with electrical and water hookups. If you plan to stay here, check current availability.
