In western Lyon County, Blood Run National Historic Landmark is an archaeological site on the Iowa–South Dakota border. The site was inhabited from 900 AD to 1720 AD. Mowed paths let you take a self-guided walk to protected burial mounds, village sites and other features of cultural and historical significance. The long period of settlement and the different traces offer two connected perspectives on the walk: the span of human presence and the site's archaeological features.
Archaeology and environmental education
The Lyon County Nature Center offers a different focus. It provides environmental education through live and taxidermied animals, interactive exhibits and artifacts. This brings together two different ways to explore: at Blood Run, a self-guided walk leads to cultural and historical features outdoors; at the Nature Center, you'll encounter animal specimens, exhibits and artifacts. Those interested in a site's past will also find a way to engage with nature topics here.
Trails, river and seasonal activities
Island Park is located on two islands in the Rock River. A 1.6-mile concrete trail there is designed for biking and walking. In summer, you can also fish for pike in the park. Gitchie Manitou State Preserve contains the designated type section of Sioux Quartzite. From the parking lot, an approximately 0.5-mile access trail leads on foot to the preserve's natural area. The distances refer to different things: a recreational trail in the park and a footpath from the parking lot into a protected area.
It's also worth keeping the time periods for seasonal activities in mind. Pike fishing is possible in Island Park in summer. Horseback riding is allowed seasonally in the Hidden Bridge Wildlife Area from mid-May to mid-September; check the exact dates before your trip. The Boon Ranch Wildlife Area offers hiking trails. Activities at the Lake Pahoja Recreation Area include ice fishing, hunting, biking, birdwatching and canoeing. For boating, the Klondike Area on the South Dakota side has a boat ramp.
Landscape and local history
Calico Skies sits on a plateau overlooking the hills and valleys of pastureland and the forest of a wildlife area near the Big Sioux River. Open pastureland and forest shape the view described here. This adds another perspective on the landscape alongside the trails and protected areas.
In Rock Rapids, the Rapid Speedway's dirt-track racing roots go back to the early 20th century. The speedway continues to host USRA Stock Car, B-Mod and Hobby Stock races. If you'd like to combine a visit with a race, check the schedule in advance.
