Chariton brings together parks, historic sites, and a wetland south of the city. During your stay, you can focus on outdoor recreation, the history of the central business district, or the landscape and its bird species. The differences between these attractions can help you plan your time according to your interests.

Recreation in Parks and at the Lakes

The Chariton Splash Pad was added to Bingham Park in 2023. Its design features Old Betsy, Chariton’s first steam fire engine, as well as the Chariton Water Tower. At Northwest Park, a winding path runs through an 18-hole disc golf course and offers views of a pond. The Chariton Dog Park in Franklin Park has separate fenced areas where small and large dogs can play freely. These examples offer different highlights: a local design motif, disc golf with pond views, and a dedicated area for dogs.

The Chariton City Lakes comprise Lake Morris and Ellis. Both lakes offer opportunities for water recreation, but they no longer serve as a water source for the City of Chariton. The specific activities permitted at each lake may vary; if water recreation is important to your plans, check what is currently permitted in advance. Lakeview Golf & Country Club is a semi-private golf course in Chariton. Its semi-private status sets it apart from the parks and lakes, whose recreational offerings are described more generally.

Historic Sites and Different Points in Time

The Lucas County Courthouse Square Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 11, 2014. The historic district encompasses Chariton’s central business district, as well as commercial, public, and fraternal buildings. The district can thus be understood through the different types of buildings that contribute to its character.

Halferty Park is Chariton’s oldest park and was listed as “North Park” on the 1866 city map. The park was also a venue for Chautauqua events that attracted audiences of several thousand people. These historical details give the place several points of reference: its name on the city map and its former use for events. The A.J. Stephens House was the first building on the Lucas County Historical Society campus in western Chariton. It adds the campus’s building sequence to the history of the district and the park.

Nature South of Chariton

Pin Oak Marsh is one mile south of Chariton and covers 160 acres. A 2024 city profile describes the wetland as a habitat for two trumpeter swans and various migrating ducks, geese, shorebirds, and songbirds. This adds a distinct nature theme to the parks and city history: a wetland whose described habitat includes both swans and several groups of migrating birds.

Planning Park Visits

Parks in Chariton are open from sunrise to sunset; checking seasonal hours may be helpful when planning your visit. Park shelters are available on a “first come, first served” basis: whoever arrives first gets to use one. Keep this rule in mind if you plan to use a shelter. Together with the varying opportunities at the lakes and the golf course’s semi-private status, this makes for practical differences between the offerings that you can consider when choosing activities.
