Walking Trails and Choosing a Route

The Algona recreational bike and walking trail covers about two paved miles along a safe, scenic route. It is designed for walkers, runners, cyclists, and other pedestrians. Parking for this trail is available at Tietz Park. Since parking rules can change, check the current situation before you arrive. Another clearly measured option is the loop in Central Park: after three laps, it is about one mile long. This distance refers to three laps, not one. Comparing the two, the paved trail is two miles, while the park loop is one mile for three laps, offering a clear guide to their approximate lengths.

History: From the POW Camp to Racing

The Camp Algona POW Museum preserves the history of a POW camp that operated in Algona from 1943 to 1946. From April 1944 to February 1946, the camp housed a total of 10,000 German prisoners. This distinguishes two periods: the years the camp was in operation and the later period when the prisoners lived there.

The Iowa Hall of Fame and Racing Museum in Algona features iconic race cars, local racing heroes, and defining moments in Iowa's racing history. Its historical focus differs from that of the Camp Algona POW Museum: one preserves the history of the POW camp, while the other focuses on racing in Iowa.

Parks and Their Conditions

Central Park has a splash pad that is open seasonally, from spring through early fall. Weather and city planning can affect its operation; if the splash pad is important for your travel dates, check whether it is currently open before visiting. South Park has lighted tennis and pickleball courts; their availability may depend on maintenance or programs. Tietz Park has a zip line. Veterans Park offers river access at Keith's Landing; it is sometimes also called North Park. The splash pad's seasonal window is from spring through early fall; maintenance or programs may affect the availability of the lighted tennis and pickleball courts.
