Waterfall and River in the City Center

The Falls are located in a city park in downtown Cascade and offer a recreational opportunity as well as a scenic view. The waterfall gave Cascade its name. It therefore shapes not only the landscape but is also connected to the town’s name.

Riverview Park & Amphitheatre is also in the city center, right next to the North Fork Maquoketa River, and offers views of the river’s waterfalls. Canoers and kayakers can use a take-out point with parking within walking distance of Riverview Park. The take-out point provides access to the North Fork toward several locations south of Cascade. Since water levels and access can vary, check conditions before your trip.

Trails and Park Amenities

The Coohey Memorial Trail is a riverfront path in Cascade Community Park and is suitable for walking and biking. The park covers a little more than 8 acres and includes a playground, a baseball/softball field, tennis courts, a basketball court and sand volleyball courts. In addition to the trail, the park offers a range of sports and play options. If you plan to use a specific facility, check its current status before your visit, as individual amenities may change.

Hiking in the Surrounding Area

About five miles east of Cascade is Whitewater Canyon, a 562-acre wildlife management area. It offers hikers viewpoints and panoramas, as well as several caves and rock shelters. Trail conditions and access can vary; check the latest information before your visit.

To choose the focus of your outing, it helps to understand the difference between these places: Coohey Memorial Trail is a park path for walking and biking, while Whitewater Canyon offers viewpoints, caves and rock shelters for hikers. This makes it easier to decide whether you would prefer a park trail or the hiking landscape nearby for your activities.

Local History and Summer Music

The Cascade Historic Limestone Silo & Agricultural Interpretive Center is a historic limestone silo dating from the 1930s. Another period in local history is reflected in St Matthias Parish: In July 1995, the St Mary and St Martin congregations in Cascade merged. The merger returned the parish to the name St Matthias Parish. The silo and the parish’s history thus represent different historical subjects and periods.

Rockin' on the River brings live music to the Riverview Park amphitheater every June, July and August. If you plan to travel during this period or want to attend a specific program, check the event schedule before you leave.
