Uplands, River Bottomlands and Wetlands

In Pike State Forest, the terrain ranges from rolling uplands to the low-lying river bottomlands of the Patoka River.

The Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area protects one of the few remaining areas of wooded wetlands in the Midwest’s lowland river bottomlands. This brings a rare landscape type into focus: wooded wetlands within a river floodplain.

Trails and Activities

The Interlake Off-Road State Recreation Area offers a different landscape story. It consists of former coal-mining land and spans the borders of Pike and Warrick counties. The area covers about 3,550 acres, with nearly 100 miles of trails and 17 lakes, many of which are open to fishing. The trails cater to off-road vehicle enthusiasts, horseback riders, hikers and mountain bikers. In this way, trails and lakes stand as distinct attractions, without limiting the area to a single form of recreation.

Pike State Forest also offers opportunities for hunting, horseback riding, picnicking, birdwatching and hiking. At the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area, visitors can observe and photograph wildlife, hunt, fish, hike, canoe and take part in interpretive programs. Access may vary by refuge unit. When comparing activities, the forest’s picnicking and horseback riding opportunities and the refuge’s canoeing and programs stand out in particular.

The Sugar Ridge Fish & Wildlife Area consists of six separate units covering about 8,500 acres in total. The acreage may change as land is managed. Its division into several units sets Sugar Ridge apart from a single contiguous area; at the same time, the total acreage remains an estimate.
