Southeast of Paoli lies Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest, an 88-acre tract of original Central Hardwood forest. This gives nature in Orange County a clearly defined place alongside historical discoveries. If you’re interested in old-growth forest landscapes, this tract is a destination in its own right.

Forest and History Around Paoli

The Initial Point also appears in two forms. A ceremonial marker for the Initial Point is located on the lawn of the Orange County Courthouse in Paoli. The original Initial Point is accessible from Paoli via E. Pivot Point Road and lies about 5.5 miles to the south. Parking and a short path are available there. This lets you distinguish the marker in town from the original point when including these names in your plans.

The Paoli Historic District is a National Register historic district with 144 contributing buildings. The Orange County Historic Museum focuses on artifacts and historically significant objects from Orange County, Indiana. The collection is complemented by two recreated settings: a one-room schoolhouse and a doctor’s office from an earlier era. This brings collection pieces and reconstructed places together as you explore the county’s history.

The museum is open during the 2026 season, usually Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; other times may be available by appointment. Check the opening hours before your visit. The Thomas Elwood Lindley House offers a different historical perspective. Dating to around 1852, its restoration reflects its use as a farmhouse from the mid-1850s through the 1860s. Visits are by appointment only.

A Train Ride and Other Experiences

The French Lick Scenic Railway offers a 1-hour-and-30-minute ride departing from a historic limestone depot built in 1907. Along the way, the train passes through Burton Tunnel, Indiana’s second-longest railroad tunnel, and through Hoosier National Forest. The stated ride duration gives you a clear timeframe, while the route takes you through two distinctive features: the tunnel and the forest.

Dining, wine, and events also offer ways to shape your visit. French Lick Winery offers food and wine tastings for groups of up to 50 during regular business hours. The Spirits of French Lick distillery is next to the winery; tours are available by appointment. These offerings have different arrangements: group visits to the winery take place during regular business hours, while distillery tours require an appointment.

Bear Hollow Block Bash takes place annually in French Lick, with dates varying from year to year. Check the date for your travel year. Paoli Peaks offers skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. Winter conditions and opening hours vary there, so it’s worth checking the latest information if you’re planning these activities.

When looking for hotels in Orange County, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your visit: local history, a train ride, or seasonal winter sports appeal to different interests. The attractions and experiences offer concrete starting points without prescribing a set order for your trip.
