Portland’s Bowstring Truss Bridge crosses the Salamonia River and is Indiana’s only concrete bowstring truss bridge. The area also offers historic sites, parks, trails, and events. When planning your stay, you can choose between architecture and regional history, time outdoors, and seasonal offerings.

Portland’s Bridge and History

The Bowstring Truss Bridge was built in 1914 by the Isaac E. Smith construction company of Wayne County. It was designed by Portland civil engineer O. O. Clayton. Its construction makes it a distinctive technical and historical landmark: it is included in the National Register of Historic Places listing for the central business district.

Downtown also features a clearly defined historic area. There, a recently restored five-block section of historically significant buildings is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Floral Hall adds to these historic sites: the building dates to 1891 and is also listed on the register. The bridge, downtown district, and Floral Hall each offer a different way to explore Portland’s architectural history.

The Jay County Historical Museum’s collection of thousands of artifacts dates back to 1838. Museum open houses are often held on Sundays. Since current dates should be confirmed, check the museum’s website or Facebook page before your visit. This makes a useful addition to the museum’s collections, which are of ongoing interest.

Parks and Trails

Hudson Family Park brings several recreational options together in one place: the grounds include a lake, walking trails, a large playground, and an amphitheater. In summer, it hosts events in the Arts in the Park series. If you’d like to plan your stay around a particular program, check current event dates in advance.

For a walk, there is also the Hudson Park Trail of Trees, a 1-mile trail in Hudson Park in Portland. The Jay County Hospital Wellness Walkway is another option: this paved trail is for pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles. Its front section is a quarter mile long, and the back section is half a mile long. The front section, at a quarter mile, is half as long as the back section, at half a mile.

Portland Water Park is a family-oriented public water park with a beach entry, lazy river, large water slides, and lily pads. For the 2026 operating season, regular hours are Sunday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m., and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Check the hours before your trip if the park is a key part of your plans.

Events and Culture

The Jay County Heritage Festival is held annually in early fall on the grounds of the Jay County Historical Museum. Its venue and time of year make it a distinct reason to visit Portland. Check the current festival dates before your trip, as the schedule varies from year to year.

The Jay County Fair program includes rides on the midway, demolition derbies, a truck and tractor pull, a classic car parade, and entertainment featuring nationally known performers. If you’re comparing different types of events, the lineup ranges from a traditional fair to motorsports and vehicle shows. Jay County Civic Theatre offers live performances, educational and career opportunities, and workshops to develop acting skills.

Across Jay County, the Civic Theatre has provided theatrical entertainment throughout the county for more than 30 years. Its offerings therefore extend beyond Portland. When choosing where to stay, consider whether you want to focus on Portland’s historic sites and parks or also include cultural offerings from the wider region.
