Plainfield can be explored through three distinct highlights: the history of the Religious Society of Friends, trails along White Lick Creek and through the woods, and a seasonal outdoor water park. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether Quaker history, nature trails, or Splash Island will shape your stay.

Quaker History in Plainfield

Annual meetings of the Religious Society of Friends have been held at the site of the Western Yearly Meetinghouse in Plainfield since 1858. The Depository was built in 1873 to preserve Quaker records. Friends Central Academy served as a secondary school from 1881 to 1919. Together, these places span a period from the meetings and preservation of records to secondary education.

Trails with Different Character

The White Lick Creek Trail begins at the Richard A. Carlucci Recreation & Aquatic Center in Plainfield and runs south along White Lick Creek on a paved path to Hummel Park. It connects with the Al & Jan Barker Sports Complex, Anderson Park, and Friendship Gardens Park. Hikers, cyclists, and walkers can enjoy views of the creek. At Friendship Gardens, the trail crosses White Lick Creek on an old iron truss bridge that was relocated from southern Guilford Township. Creek views and the history of the bridge are among the distinctive features of this route. A truss distributes loads across connected supports.

Echo Hollow Nature Park is within Plainfield’s city limits and has more than five miles of gravel or natural-surface trails through the woods. As measured on April 20, 2024, the accessible trails totaled 5.1 miles; the extension had added 1.6 miles. In contrast to the paved sections of the White Lick Creek Trail and the Vandalia Trail, the focus here is on woods and unpaved surfaces.

The 8.7-mile Plainfield section of the Vandalia Trail is paved and maintained by Plainfield Parks & Recreation. The trail is largely flat and linear rather than a loop. It connects residential areas and parks, including Franklin Park, and has little car traffic. In a direct comparison, the White Lick Creek Trail emphasizes creek views and park connections, while the Vandalia Trail emphasizes its linear route and connections between residential areas and parks.

Downtown and Seasonal Water Fun

The Plainfield Chamber Farmers' Market is located in downtown Plainfield.

Splash Island Family Waterpark in Plainfield covers 4.5 acres and has a Caribbean theme. The outdoor water park offers three water slides, a 900-foot lazy river, and an interactive play area for children. It is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend; check the specific seasonal dates before your trip.
