Ferdinand brings together historic points of interest, seasonal events and a walking path around Old Town Lake. The different dates and highlights are useful for planning a trip: Monastery Immaculate Conception and the Ferdinand Historic District represent different historical themes; Christkindlmarkt and the Christmas Pyramid have different time frames.
Monastery and Local History
Monastery Immaculate Conception (Castle on the Hill) is a historic landmark in Ferdinand. It was founded in 1867 and is home to a large Benedictine community. The Monastery is located in Ferdinand just off Interstate 64—a specific point of reference for geographic orientation.
The Ferdinand Historic District has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since November 20, 2024. Its documented period spans 1840 to 1971; its designated areas include architecture, commerce, and community planning and development. These offer complementary historical perspectives: the Monastery’s founding year and Benedictine community, and the themes highlighted in the District listing.
The dates serve different purposes: 1867 marks the Monastery’s founding, 1840 to 1971 is the Historic District’s period, and 2024 is the year it was listed in the Register. The designated areas provide further context: architecture, commerce, and community planning and development draw attention to different aspects of local history. Those interested in Ferdinand from a historical perspective will find more than a single date to explore.
Christkindlmarkt and Seasonal Dates
The Christkindlmarkt in Ferdinand takes place every year on the third full weekend in November. More than 200 festively decorated stalls offer handcrafted items, Christmas merchandise, antiques and art. Regional food and wine are also available. The selection therefore extends beyond Christmas merchandise alone: art and antiques complement the seasonal focus, while food and wine add a culinary dimension to the market.
The Christmas Pyramid is on display in Ferdinand from November through January. Unlike the Christkindlmarkt, which is concentrated on one November weekend, it has a longer seasonal time frame. November is the month they have in common; for a visit centered around the market, the specific date is the third full weekend in November.
Walk Around Old Town Lake
A walking path runs around Old Town Lake in Ferdinand. Approximately halfway along the path, there is a rest area offering a place to pause. The loop gives a walk a clear route without requiring it to take any particular amount of time.
Old Town Lake opened on July 3, 2020, for hiking, fishing and recreation. These activities add other interests to a visit to the lake alongside the walking path. The date refers to the opening, while the loop and the rest area roughly halfway around describe the route.
