The Metamora Courthouse was built in 1845 and served as the center of county administration until the county seat moved to Eureka in 1896. It is one of two surviving courthouses on the historic Eighth Judicial Circuit, which Abraham Lincoln traveled. Its exhibits cover early regional history, the court system of the 1850s, and Lincoln’s life on the Circuit.

History in Metamora and Eureka

A visit to the courthouse offers insight into the region’s former administration and justice system. In Eureka, the Ronald Reagan Museum focuses on a different subject: its collection includes more than 10,000 objects from Reagan’s time at Eureka College, his film and television career, his term as governor of California, and his two terms as president of the United States. The historical topics thus range from local court history to Reagan’s political career.

The Reagan Peace Garden is also located on the historic campus of Eureka College. Its features include a bust of the 40th president and a section of the Berlin Wall. If you’re interested in political history, the museum collection and memorial offer different perspectives.

Visiting hours also vary: the Metamora Courthouse is open on Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. The Ronald Reagan Museum is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday visits are available by appointment only, with appointments required at least 72 hours in advance. The museum is closed on public holidays. Check visiting hours before your trip.

Fens, riverbanks, and natural communities

Spring Bay Fen is the only remaining example of a cold-water, tall-shrub fen along the Illinois River in the state of Illinois. The fen is home to rare plants and provides habitat for wildlife, including wood ducks, herons, great egrets, bullfrogs, garter snakes, and beavers. Chinquapin Bluffs Land and Water Reserve offers a different kind of variety: it includes twelve natural communities. These range from dry hill prairie and sand prairie to wet seeps, marsh, and wooded floodplain.

At Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area, large areas of water make up a significant proportion of the site’s total area: the area lies on the east bank of the Illinois River and covers 2,900 acres, of which 2,462 acres are water. Letcher Basin Land and Water Reserve, in turn, encompasses 1.5 miles of the Mackinaw River and provides habitat for endangered and threatened species. Access is from the north via County Road 1975E, also known as Denman Road; there is a small, informal visitor parking area at the entrance. Check parking conditions before your trip.

Trails on foot, by bike, and on the water

For hiking and cross-country skiing, Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area offers more than 3 miles of marked trails. Seasonal trail restrictions apply. Hunter access is available from January 1 through October 1. At Chinquapin Bluffs, the Sam Leman Canoe Launch gives paddlers access to the Mackinaw River. The associated parking area also provides access to the eastern part of the reserve; the trails begin about 100 yards south of the parking area.

In Metamora, Black Partridge Park covers 450 acres. Its amenities include wooded areas, deep ravines, sports fields, playground equipment, pavilions, and an extensive trail network. In El Paso, the 5.4-mile Bike Trail & Walking Path combines bike and pedestrian routes: it begins 1.5 miles north of El Paso, runs to South Pointe Park, and passes through the community. The two offerings differ both in length and in character: one is an expansive park area, while the other is a designated bike and pedestrian route.

Lake Eureka lies within the city limits of Eureka. A city park with a playground and public day-use facilities surround the lake. If you’d also like to discover local produce and handmade goods during your stay, Eureka has a seasonal farmers market in downtown. It takes place on select Saturdays; offerings range from fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, and plants to crafts and prepared food. The mix of vendors may vary by date, so it’s worth checking the specific market dates.

Museums and local collections

In Roanoke, the Hunzinger Museum preserves collections on the community’s history. These include Native American artifacts, butterflies, an extensive stamp collection, and photographs. In Metamora, the Adlai E. Stevenson I Home is a museum dating from the American Civil War; it is one block from the town square. These stops add local history and a range of museum collections to the broader topics.
