Apple River Canyon State Park covers 1,907 acres and is located in Jo Daviess County. The park is home to 47 bird species, and the Primrose Trail is an accessible path. Nature enthusiasts can therefore enjoy both a specific trail and a remarkable diversity of birds.

Canyons, Prairie, and Old-Growth Forests

At Wapello Land and Water Reserve, the focus shifts from canyons to restored tallgrass prairie. Several miles of mowed grass trails wind through this prairie area. The reserve also includes remnants of a prehistoric village and a ceremonial mound; local habitation is dated to approximately 1050 to 1350 AD. The reserve thus brings landscape and early history together without requiring you to combine different locations.

Schurmeier Forest offers a different landscape: its deeper canyons are home to old-growth trees. Unlike the grass trails at Wapello Land and Water Reserve, the scenery here is defined by forests and canyons. Schurmeier Forest also has a picnic shelter for family gatherings—a specific way to enjoy the landscape while spending time together.

Historic Sites to Explore on Your Own or With a Guide

Apple River Fort has been reconstructed and is open for self-guided tours. It was the only fort attacked by Black Hawk during the turbulent summer of 1832; admission is free. The combination of the reconstructed site and a clearly defined historical event gives your visit a specific focus.

Unlike the self-guided tour at Apple River Fort, tours at the U. S. Grant Home are led by interpreters. The two offerings therefore differ in how they present the sites: here, you explore the fort on your own; there, interpreters lead the tour.

Galena: Main Street and Events

Galena Country is the official destination for Jo Daviess County and lies in the heart of the Driftless Region. In Galena, historic Main Street follows a 19th-century street lined with original buildings. More than 125 shops and restaurants are also part of Galena’s historic Main Street. Architecture and commerce come together in one place; a visit lets you admire original buildings while enjoying a large selection of shops and restaurants.

Events in Galena Country include cemetery tours, historical reenactments, hot-air balloon races, and parades. This selection ranges from historically themed events to races and parades. If a particular event is a priority for your visit, check the dates in advance.

Hiking and Biking Trails Through Diverse Landscapes

Those who want to explore Galena Country on foot will find hiking trails through prairies and forests and past Effigy Mounds. The Galena River Trail passes through tunnels and wetlands, goes by limestone cliffs, and crosses streams via bridges. The trails described here offer varied scenery, from prairie and forest to wetlands, cliffs, and stream crossings. You can plan your explorations around whichever of these landscapes and trail features interest you most.
