A striking geological history shaped the Snake River Canyon: the Snake River carved it by cutting through ancient basalt lava flows. The canyon stretches for more than 50 miles; two large waterfalls and countless springs are among its natural features. At Shoshone Falls, the scale becomes clear in numbers: they are 212 feet high and 900 feet wide—more than four times as wide as they are high. Spring, when the snowpack begins to melt, is considered the best time to see the falls.

Trails Along the Canyon and at the Lake

The trails also have two clearly distinct profiles. The Canyon Rim Trail is 7.6 miles long, paved, and runs along the canyon rim. At Dierkes Lake Park, an unpaved 1.7-mile loop circles the lake. So, in addition to distance, the routes and surfaces differ: a longer paved path along the canyon rim contrasts with a shorter unpaved loop. The difference between the two routes is 5.9 miles. If the type of trail matters when planning, you can make your choice based on these specific features.

There is also a specific choice to make at Dierkes Lake: non-motorized boats, kayaks, and canoes are permitted. Before launching, check the water conditions and applicable restrictions. The lake can therefore be considered from two perspectives when planning: as a walking loop and as a place for permitted non-motorized watercraft. At the canyon, the Perrine Bridge provides another striking landmark. It spans the Snake River Canyon almost 500 feet above the Snake River and is open for BASE jumping year-round. If you plan this activity, check the conditions beforehand.

Museums and History

Culture is represented in two distinct museum settings. Built in 1914, Curry Union School now houses the Twin Falls County Historical Society Museum. The nonprofit Herrett Center for Arts & Science is a museum on the main campus of the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. These are two distinct points of reference: the school building’s construction date shapes the history of the museum site at Curry Union School, while the Herrett Center is distinguished by its nonprofit museum role and college campus location.

Rock Creek Station and Stricker Homesite offer another historical perspective. Dating to 1865, the site was an early transportation hub that served the Oregon Trail, the Overland Mail stagecoach route, and the Kelton Freight Road. Visitors can see the Rock Creek Store building, the Stricker House, the reconstructed summer house, and the Rock Creek Interpretive Center. The log cabin at Rock Creek Station/Stricker Homesite is the oldest surviving building in Twin Falls County. The three named routes explain the site’s historical role, while the visitor buildings and log cabin also make its built history tangible.
