A solidified lava lake on a crater floor, royal buildings, and rare bird species: Hawaii can be discovered through very different encounters with nature and history.

Volcanic Landscapes and Trails

At Kīlauea Iki, the hike leads through lush rainforest to a solidified lava lake on the crater floor. From the overlook, the loop trail is 3.3 miles long; the hike takes approximately two to three hours. Check trail conditions and access before hiking. You should also consider parking availability when planning.

Chain of Craters Road is an exceptionally scenic and spectacular route. In the coastal region along the road, trails, settlement sites, heiau, petroglyphs, and agricultural structures bear witness to centuries of human use. Since road conditions and closures can change in an active volcano park, it’s worth checking the latest conditions before driving.

In the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park, trails pass through a cinder desert landscape and other ecosystems. The district provides habitat for rare and endemic species. More than 850 plant species are found in the national park, including more than 300 endemic species. Trail conditions and weather vary considerably with elevation. A reservation in advance is required to watch the sunrise in Haleakalā National Park; check the current reservation process before your trip.

On Hawaiʻi Island, Kīlauea is the island’s youngest part. The island is known for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Visitor activities on Hawaiʻi Island also include night snorkeling with manta rays. Check providers and conditions separately. Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport is a gateway to Hawaiʻi Island; it’s best to check current flight connections before your trip.

Cultural History in Buildings and Landscapes

Puʻukoholā Heiau was built by Kamehameha the Great in 1790–1791. King Kalākaua had ʻIolani Palace built in 1882. Until the monarchy was overthrown in 1893, the palace was the official royal residence and the center of the political and social life of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.

The Royal Grounds and Puʻuhonua can be explored on a self-guided tour with an audio guide. The loop is half a mile long. Hale o Keawe is a heiau and royal mausoleum featuring carved wooden figures. These historic buildings and landscaped sites offer very different experiences.

A visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center also combines a variety of experiences: you can travel the full length of the lagoon by canoe. The Aliʻi Lūʻau includes a traditional Hawaiian feast with kalua pork. Since schedules and food offerings can change, check the latest information in advance.

Waterfalls and Wildlife

ʻAkaka Falls plunge 442 feet into a stream-eroded gorge. At ʻAkaka Falls State Park, a 0.4-mile loop trail offers views of ʻAkaka Falls and Kahuna Falls. Check trail conditions and operating status before your visit.

ʻAimakapā Fishpond provides habitat for endangered Hawaiian stilts and Hawaiian coots. Along the coast of Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, you can see sea turtles, shorebirds, and occasionally Hawaiian monk seals. Sightings are not guaranteed; please observe the animals respectfully.

Hiking and Practical Information

The Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile route that crosses five valleys, runs along sea cliffs, and passes through tropical valleys. Before hiking, check trail conditions, permits, and the weather. Advance reservations are generally required to enter Hāʻena State Park. Exceptions are people with valid camping permits for Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park and residents of Hawaiʻi. Check the current rules before your visit.

The USS Arizona Memorial program is free, but tickets are required. During the memorial program, visitors reach the Memorial aboard a boat provided by the U.S. Navy. The museums and outdoor grounds of Pearl Harbor National Memorial are also free. Check the latest visitor information in advance.
