Americus offers different ways to explore its history: digital walking tours, a restored theater, historic guided tours, and a distillery experience with a tasting. When choosing what to do, it helps to distinguish these experiences by their character. You can choose a short route through downtown, explore civil rights history, discover architecture and theater history, or pair whiskey-making with a tasting and hands-on participation.

Walking Tours with Different Areas of Focus

The digital Postcard Tour takes you through Downtown Americus, includes eight stops, and is about 0.5 miles long. The Americus Movement Tour focuses on civil rights history, includes twelve stops, and incorporates audio and video materials. These offer two different formats to choose from: a walking tour with a designated route and a themed tour that incorporates audio and video as part of the experience. If a short route through downtown is important to you, consider the Postcard Tour; if you want to explore civil rights history with audio and video, the Movement Tour speaks directly to that interest.

Theater History at the Rylander Theatre

The Rylander Theatre in Downtown Americus reopened after an extensive restoration. Its restored auditorium reflects the original Art Deco aesthetic. Individual tours are available Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. without advance reservations; guided group tours must be scheduled, and advance scheduling is strongly recommended. Check the tour times before your visit and arrange a group visit accordingly. This gives you a specific time frame if the theater is a focus of your plans.

Historical Dates and Stories

The Americus Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 1, 1976. The Windsor Hotel was established in 1892; these two dates therefore mark different events: the listing of a district on a register and the establishment of a hotel. The Windsor Hotel also offers a 45-minute tour. It highlights historic features of the property and shares ghost stories about the building. So, alongside its historical perspective, the tour also has a storytelling focus that sets it apart from stop-based tour formats.

A History of Aviation

A famous aviator came to Americus, Georgia, in 1923 to buy his first airplane; he then made his first solo flight from Souther Field. A statue and monument at today’s Souther Field Airport commemorate this story. The account spans his arrival in 1923, his first solo flight, and the present-day memorials, adding another way to explore history alongside the walking tours and theater history.

Experience Whiskey and Bottle Your Own

At 13th Colony Distilleries, a tour includes a tasting and a behind-the-scenes look at the distillery. The Bottle-Your-Own Tour adds a hands-on element: visitors sample bourbon and rye whiskey from individual barrels, then fill, cork, and hand-label their own cask-strength bottle. This experience differs from tours of the city’s and buildings’ history: it focuses on the distillery and adds hands-on steps to the tasting. If whiskey is one of your interests, you can choose between a tour with a tasting and the more hands-on Bottle-Your-Own format.
