Jekyll Island combines a largely unspoiled coastline with maritime forest and a historic district. The island is part of the Golden Isles barrier island chain and is managed as a state park. The coast, nature, and history offer different ways to shape your trip without any one theme having to define your stay.

Coast, Forest, and Trails

Jekyll Island’s coastline stretches for ten miles. At Driftwood Beach, old driftwood pieces with a monumental appearance lie along the shore. South End Beach offers good opportunities to observe flocks of shorebirds and seabirds. The beach landscape and birdwatching are two distinct reasons to stop by the water.

Nature also shapes the island away from the coast: Jekyll Island encompasses more than 1,000 acres of maritime forest. At Horton Pond, a wheelchair-accessible observation platform overlooks the entire pond. The 0.7-mile Tupelo Trail is a loop through several maritime plant communities. The platform and loop offer different ways to experience the landscape: a view across the pond or a trail through different types of vegetation.

There are more than 24 miles of cycling paths and trails. They wind through dunes, along beaches, and past historic sites. Exploring the island by bike lets you take in different landscapes and cultural sites; the information describes several stretches, not one continuous route.

History in the Historic District

The 240-acre Jekyll Island Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark on June 2, 1978. In the late 19th century, Jekyll Island became an exclusive hunting club for families such as the Rockefellers, Morgans, Vanderbilts, Pulitzers, and Bakers. The Horton-DuBignon House dates to around 1738 and is one of the oldest surviving tabby structures in Georgia.

The Landmark Trolley Tour travels through the Historic District and includes admission to a historic cottage, as well as access to the Mosaic Gallery and Faith Chapel. The tour program may change. Tours of Faith Chapel highlight animal depictions, terracotta grotesques, and Tiffany and Armstrong stained-glass windows. Visitors interested in architecture and art will find specific details there that go beyond the district’s history.

The Wanderer Memory Trail offers a different historical perspective. Through interactive exhibits, it tells the story of the Wanderer and the more than 400 enslaved Africans who were brought by ship to Jekyll Island. The trail has been designated a “Site of Memory” by UNESCO’s Slave Route Project for the arrival connected with the Middle Passage. The combination of storytelling and exhibits makes the site a distinct part of a historical visit. A historic marker also recounts a specific event: according to the marker, Spanish commissioners were entertained on Jekyll Island in 1736.
