Bainbridge sits on the scenic Flint River. Cultural history and outdoor activities offer different perspectives: you can explore historic buildings and exhibitions or spend time in parks and on trails. When planning a stay, it helps to decide which of these sides of the town interests you most.
Cultural History in Bainbridge
The self-guided Bainbridge Heritage Tour includes 41 historic buildings and homes. One specific example of the area’s architectural history is the Decatur County Historic Courthouse and Courtroom: the neoclassical building was constructed in 1902. The Donalson-Rollins House dates to 1898. The Firehouse Arts Center was designed by William Augustus Edwards in 1914 and is the only example of Mission architecture in this part of the state.
The Decatur County Historical Society & Museum also focuses on the region’s history. Through artifacts, photographs, and local stories, its exhibits explore the people, industries, and everyday life that have shaped Decatur County. A visit to the museum thus complements the buildings with personal stories and objects.
Another historic stop is Oak City Cemetery. Its western section was transferred to Temple Beth-El in 1878 and became one of the first Jewish cemeteries in South Georgia. A self-guided tour of the cemetery is available; you can pick up a brochure at the Bainbridge Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Heritage Tour and cemetery tour offer distinct, independent ways to explore local history.
River, Trails, and Parks
Chason Park combines recreational amenities with a historic site: the park has a splash pad and playground, and is also home to the site of Fort Hughes. The fort was built in 1817 by U.S. soldiers under the command of Captain John M. McIntosh. The park also contains the grave of Bugler Hughes, the first soldier killed in the Seminole Indian War.
For walks, the Bainbridge Riverwalk offers about six miles of paved, lighted trails. Earle May Boat Basin Park also has paved, lighted walking trails. The park also provides access to the Flint River and has a beach with a swimming area. These destinations combine trails with different ways to enjoy the water, though they are not the same kind of outing.
Willis Park is designed as a garden park and features a Victorian gazebo and a fountain. Along with the river trails, it offers a different perspective on Bainbridge than the historic buildings and exhibits: here, the focus is on park design and spending time outdoors.
More Activities
Bainbridge Oaks Disc Golf Course has 18 holes. At Bainbridge Animal Park, visitors can feed Ringo the donkey and his goat friends treats. These attractions offer their own distinct experiences: disc golf as an activity with a set course format, and the animal park with the described opportunity to feed the animals.
For your stay, you can choose historic sites based on whether you want to explore architecture, regional exhibits, or cemetery history in more depth. If you would rather include trails and water, you’ll find lighted routes at the Riverwalk and Earle May Boat Basin Park, as well as a swimming area there. The range of activities gives you a practical basis for exploring Bainbridge according to your interests.
