A 66-acre cultural campus, an art museum in a converted historic high school and a summer outdoor concert series show just how varied a cultural stay in Sarasota can be. If you’re looking for accommodation, you can start narrowing down your options based on whether you’re especially interested in visual arts and education, circus history or live performances. This helps you distinguish the themes that could shape your stay before comparing specific travel and event dates.
Art, Campus and History
The Ringling operates a 66-acre campus in Sarasota. The Ringling Museum of Art is Florida’s official state art museum; the Circus Museum showcases historical and contemporary circus arts. The two museum themes are distinctly different: one focuses on art within the setting of a state art museum, while the other explores circus arts across different eras. If you’re looking to explore Sarasota primarily through its culture, you can choose based on your interests without combining all the offerings into a single focus.
The Sarasota Art Museum is dedicated to contemporary art. Its history is connected to the historic Sarasota High School: the school building was converted into an art museum and an education center for the visual arts. This brings together a contemporary art focus and the history of a school building. This distinction is useful for planning if you’re looking for contemporary art or are especially interested in the connection between culture and architectural history.
The campus sizes also offer a brief way to distinguish two different institutions: the downtown campus of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens covers 15 acres along Sarasota Bay, while The Ringling’s campus covers 66 acres. Both figures refer to the areas of the respective campuses. Sarasota Bay is also part of the location description of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, which is situated on the bay.
Addresses and Getting-Around Information
Mote Science Education Aquarium is located at 225 University Town Center Drive in Sarasota, Florida. At the Sarasota Art Museum, a SCAT bus stop is directly in front of the museum on South Tamiami Trail. Since transit arrangements can change, check the current SCAT schedule before you travel. This gives you a specific address or named stop as a reference point when planning a visit to either location.
Opera, Concerts and Dates
The Sarasota Opera House is a historic theater dating from 1926. Its program includes operas, symphony concerts, classical ballet, film festivals, popular music concerts and comedy shows. Sarasota Opera also offers performances for local schools. This range makes the opera house a possible destination if you’d like to choose among different forms of stage entertainment.
The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall was built in 1968 and 1969. Its shape resembles a purple seashell; it is the only theater in the world with this shape. The hall also hosts free outdoor concerts on its lawn every summer as part of the Friday Fest series. Individual schedules may vary. So if a particular concert is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for your stay in advance. This lets you consider a concert schedule differently from a selection based on the more enduring museum themes.
Another Side of Sarasota
Sarasota Jungle Gardens offers a different kind of visit: guests can hand-feed free-roaming flamingos; the specific terms for participating may vary. The attraction is also one of Florida’s oldest continuously operating attractions. The places mentioned therefore range from museums and performance venues to an attraction offering a distinctive animal experience. If you’re planning your trip around this experience, take possible changes to participation into account.
