Indian Rocks Beach is located on a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway in Pinellas County. Nature, local history and recreational activities offer different focal points for planning a trip, from a trail through mangroves to a historic beach house and sports and arts activities.
Nature and Wildlife
The Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve has a trail about half a mile long through mangroves to a viewpoint on the Intracoastal Waterway. The approximate length provides a guide to the scale of this nature outing. Wildlife also offers a seasonal point of reference: bottlenose dolphins live in the waters around Indian Rocks Beach, and manatees are present during the warmest months.
Explore Local History
The Indian Rocks Historical Museum is located in one of the city’s oldest beach houses, built in 1939. The free, self-guided audio tour Walk Indian Rocks Beach guides visitors through 14 stops with spoken commentary, historical images and music. It takes about 1.5 hours, covers around 2 miles, and starts and ends at the museum. The route length and duration provide two approximate figures to help with planning; the tour combines them with several ways of presenting history.
A dozen historical markers, mostly along Gulf Boulevard, provide information about places of significance to local history. The Beach Art Center complements these cultural offerings with classes, workshops, gallery exhibitions and special events. Check the facility’s current operating status and event schedule before visiting.
Recreation and Beach Access
Kolb Park has areas for Little League baseball, tennis, basketball and pickleball, as well as a skate park and accessible playground equipment. The 18th Avenue Main Beach Access has four beach walkways with access for people with disabilities. The offerings are clearly distinct: the park brings together a variety of sports and play options, while the Main Beach Access is defined by its beach walkways and the access described here.
Getting Around
The Beach Welcome Center is located at 105 5th Avenue North, near Gulf Boulevard. There you can get information about things to do in Indian Rocks Beach, as well as discount coupons for local businesses. Confirm operating details before your visit.
The Suncoast Beach Trolley serves Indian Rocks Beach and runs from Clearwater to St. Pete Beach, with several stops along Gulf Boulevard. If you plan to take the trolley, check the current schedule before traveling. The 15th Avenue Boat Ramp has a specific use restriction: it is reserved for Indian Rocks Beach residents and property owners whose vehicles display a properly authorized city resident parking decal.
An April Event
A Taste of IRB takes place every year in April; exact dates may vary. The event includes live music, food from more than a dozen local restaurants, and beer and wine. Offerings may change from year to year. If you’d like to include the event in your stay, check the dates for the relevant year.
