Nature trails, a route to the entrance of Honeymoon Island State Park, and historic cultural sites give Dunedin several distinct focuses for a stay. You can plan around whether you want to spend time on trails, are interested in architecture and local history, or want to include a guided walk. Trail lengths and schedules can help you weigh these options.

Nature trails and protected areas

Hammock Park is a 90-acre nature park that is home to various animal and plant species. Its network includes five miles of winding nature trails. The butterfly garden has 11 flower and plant beds. This means that nature trails and a garden area offer different experiences within the same park.

Gladys E. Douglas Preserve covers about 44 acres of environmentally sensitive land. The first phase is open to the public and includes half a mile of walking and nature trails; check local conditions before your visit. According to current knowledge, the Preserve is also home to the last known Rosemary Bald in Pinellas County. When planning, you can compare five miles of winding nature trails at Hammock Park with half a mile in the first phase of the Preserve.

The Dunedin Causeway

The Dunedin Causeway is a 2.5-mile route that runs directly from Bayshore Boulevard (Alternate 19) to the entrance of Honeymoon Island State Park. Kayaks can be launched at the causeway; check local guidance before setting out. The same location offers both a route to a named destination and an opportunity to launch a kayak.

Chapel, local history, and art

Andrews Memorial Chapel is located at the entrance to Hammock Park. Built in 1888, it showcases authentic Victorian Gothic church architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1972. The chapel’s architecture, construction date, and register listing give it a distinct historical focus.

The Dunedin History Museum is located in the heart of downtown. The building housing the museum was last rebuilt in 1924. The Dunedin Fine Art Center opened in 1975 and includes a public art school and a library. If you are planning your visit around a specific offering, check the current program in advance. Together, the chapel, museum, and art center appeal to different interests: religious architecture, local history, and art.

Guided walk and visit planning

The Historic Victoria Drive Sunset Stroll is an approximately 1.5-hour guided walk along Dunedin’s historic waterfront road, Victoria Drive. From September through May, the walk is offered on the second Friday evening of each month. This makes it easy to include the stroll as a separate event in your plans.

Hours for open visits to Andrews Memorial Chapel may change due to holidays, events, and weather. Calling ahead is recommended.
