Discover Mary Esther through its distinctive contrasts: Silver Sands Creek flows through mature woodlands at Oak Tree Nature Park, which also features a nature trail and an archaeological site. The area's history leads back to early settlers along Santa Rosa Sound and Reverend John Newton's first school. Add to that the differently equipped Azalea Park and the annual Veterans Day Event & Parade. Nature, history, and events offer different focal points for planning your stay.
Nature Parks with Different Features
Oak Tree Nature Park covers 25 acres and has a nature trail. Silver Sands Creek flows through mature woodlands, and the park also contains an archaeological site. Here, a nature trail and woodland landscape come together with an archaeological connection. For travelers who want to consider nature and local history together, this combination gives the park a distinctive focus.
Azalea Park has a different character: its features include native flowers, a pavilion, benches, swings, and a fire pit; the park also has a scenic walking trail. You can distinguish between the parks based on what you’re looking for: Oak Tree Park centers on its creek, woods, and nature trail, while Azalea Park highlights its walking trail, flowers, and the park features listed above.
Settlement History and Early Institutions
Jesse Rogers Memorial Cemetery bears the name of an early settler: around 1840, Jesse Rogers settled with his family and a herd of cattle along Santa Rosa Sound in Mary Esther. The cemetery contains old graves, including that of Peter Green, dating to 1885. The approximate date of Rogers’ settlement and the specific year of Peter Green’s grave offer two different points of reference for Mary Esther’s history.
A second historical thread leads to Reverend John Newton, a clergyman and teacher. In the mid-1850s, he settled in the area known as Narrows, west of Fort Walton Beach, which is now called Mary Esther. Newton founded Mary Esther’s first school; during the Civil War, it also served as a church. Early education and religious use thus add another perspective to the area’s settlement history.
